Review by Zvi A. Sesling

There are a lot of anthologies out there, a number of them about food.? Few, however,

top Kevin Young?s entry.? Young, an excellent poet in his own right, does a fine job of selecting gastronomical verse from a marvelous and diverse group of poets.

To name just a few, Mary Oliver, Seamus Heaney, Yusef Komunyakaa, Lucille Clifton, Elizabeth Bishop, Mark Doty, Billy Collins, Ted Kooser, Charles Reznikoff, Langston Hughes, William Carlos Williams, Matthew Dickman, Jane Hirschfield, Charles Simic, Frank O?Hara, W.B. Yeats, Philip Larkin, Charles Baudelaire, Pablo Neruda, Sylvia Plath and a nice selection of Young?s own poetry.

On the humorous side Roy Blount Jr.?s Song to Bacon brings it home:

Consumer groups have gone and taken

Some of the savor out of bacon.

Protein-per-penny in bacon they say,

Equals needles-per-square-inch of hay.

Well, I know, after cooking all

??????????? (You also get a lot of lossage

??????????? in life, romance, and country sausage.)

And I will vote for making it cheaper,

Wider, longer, leaner, deeper

But let?s not throw the baby, please

Out with the (visual rhyme here) grease.

There?s nothing crumbles like bacon still,

And I don?t think there ever will

Be anything, whate?er you use

For meat, that chews like bacon chews.

and also: I wish these groups would tell

Me whether they counted in the smell,

The smell of it cooking?s worth? $2.10 a pound.

And how bout the sound?

And then there are some tantalizing opening lines such as Hot by Craig Arnold:?

I?m cooking Thai?you bring the beer./The same order, although it?s been a year/

--friendships based on food are rarely stable./We should have left ours at the table

There is Jimmy Santiago Baca?s Green Chile:

I prefer red chile over my eggs

and potatoes for breakfast.

Adrienne Rich begins Peeling Onions thus:

Only to have a grief

equal to all these tears!

There?s not a sob in my chest.

And finally there is Howard Nemerov?s two-line tribute to Bacon & Eggs:

The chicken contributes,

But the pig gives his all.

These are just a few of the selections in this volume worth devouring. In often intriguing or delightful verse there is discourse on melons, berries, meat, vegetables, fruits ? enough to fill a supermarket or your refrigerator and pantry.? It covers appetizers, main courses, desserts, celebrations, holidays and the seasons. The views of food and their relationship to us are there for our discovery.

If you are a fan of food ? and who is not, even if dieting ? then this book will whet your appetite and crave a snack.

A state-by-state look at the East Coast superstorm

The massive storm that started out as Hurricane Sandy slammed into the East Coast and morphed into a huge and problematic system affecting millions of people. Here's a snapshot of what is happening or expected, state by state.

CAROLINAS

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued 14 members of a crew forced to abandon a tall ship off the North Carolina coast. One of the crew members was found hours later and was in critical condition at a hospital Monday night, but the ship's captain was still missing. The HMS Bounty was originally built for the 1962 film "Mutiny on the Bounty" starring Marlon Brando and has been featured in other films, including one of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies. Power outages: 5,639.

CONNECTICUT

The University of Connecticut is closing Tuesday, joining a hundreds of other schools and school systems across the state. The closure includes UConn's law school and the UConn Health Center, though the John Dempsey Hospital will remain open during the storm. Two people have died in storm related accidents. State police said a person died after being hit by a falling tree and the Easton Fire Department said a firefighter was fatally injured when a tree fell on his truck. Power outages: 615,000.

DELAWARE

Dover Air Force Base has relocated some aircraft in anticipation of the storm, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency has requested that the base be used as a staging area for support and supplies. Some residents of low-lying areas of the base have been ordered to evacuate. Power outages: 32,000.

ILLINOIS

The powerful storm is expected to extend as far as Chicago, where the National Weather Service already has issued high wind warnings and a lakeshore flood warning for Tuesday and Wednesday. City officials said Lake Shore Drive, along Lake Michigan, is expected to remain open. But they urged motorists to proceed carefully. The Chicago Transit Authority said it will reroute buses if necessary.

KENTUCKY

Sandy is expected to bring snow to far southeastern Kentucky. A winter storm warning is in effect in Harlan, Letcher and Pike counties through Wednesday morning. Forecasters say snow could accumulate from 4 to 10 inches in high elevations and 1 to 3 inches in lower elevations.

MAINE

Virtually all Maine public schools opened Monday but some were closing early before the heaviest rain and wind from Hurricane Sandy. State officials say the biggest concern is wind, which is expected to cause widespread power outages. The state's utilities say they have crews poised to deal with expected power outages, including some from Canada. Power outages: 80,000.

MARYLAND

Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake says vehicular travel is banned on city roads beginning at 6 p.m. Monday. The restrictions to do not apply to uniformed personnel, hospital employees or other medical providers. Gov. Martin O'Malley earlier Monday closed the Bay Bridge.

MASSACHUSETTS

Voluntary evacuation recommendations have been issued in Scituate, Lynn, New Bedford and Plum Island. The recommendations are for just certain sections of the communities that could be affected by flooding as a result of Hurricane Sandy. Mandatory evacuations were ordered in sections of Dartmouth and Fall River. Power outages: 400,000.

MICHIGAN

Michigan utilities say high winds could cause power outages in the state and they're keeping an eye on the weather to respond to power problems. DTE Energy Co. said gusts of 50 mph Monday evening and Tuesday could affect some it its 2.1 million customers. Power outages: 23,000.

NEW HAMPSHIRE

Gov. John Lynch has urged all drivers to be off the roads by 3 p.m. as Hurricane Sandy approaches. Lynch declared a state of emergency and directed that non-essential state workers be released from work Monday afternoon. He urged employers to consider releasing workers early. The governor has put 100 New Hampshire Guard soldiers on active duty. At least 13 shelters have been opened. Power outages: 120,000.

NEW JERSEY

All roads into and out of Ocean City are closed due to flooding that has cut off the popular Jersey shore resort community. Former Hurricane Sandy already had flooded most of Atlantic City, sweeping away an old section of the city's famed boardwalk. Officials said two people were killed when a tree landed on their vehicle. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said Newark Liberty airport had been shut down until further notice. The airport had technically been open throughout the day although flights were not coming or going. Power outages: 1.7 million.

NEW YORK

Much of New York was plunged into darkness Monday from the superstorm and utilities that deliberately darkened downtown Manhattan to prevent storm damage. Water flooded into two major commuter tunnels and onto some subway tracks at stations in the city. Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office said at least five people have died in New York state because of the storm. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Power said airports in metropolitan New York City have been closed until further notice due to flooding. Power outages: 1,130,000.

OHIO

Residents of low-lying areas and along Lake Erie were told to watch for flooding; utilities are anticipating high winds that could blow down trees and poles. Snow is forecast in some areas. Power outages: 22,000.

PENNSYLVANIA

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said Monday that more than 200 bridges and roads were closed because of downed trees, power lines and flooding, most of it in southeastern Pennsylvania. Officials from the state transit agency and the Pennsylvania Turnpike instituted speed restrictions over concerns about high winds and ordered certain vehicles, including empty trucks and motorcycles, off some highways. Three people have died in storm-related incidents, including an 8-year-old boy who was killed when a tree limb fell on him. Power outages: more than 1 million.

RHODE ISLAND

Officials are concerned about wind driving water north up Narragansett Bay, which could create flooding in low-lying areas of the upper bay, including Providence, Warwick and Cranston. Power outages: 110,000.

TENNESSEE

Snow is expected in higher elevations, where a freeze warning has been issued. High winds are expected in many areas.

VERMONT

Gov. Peter Shumlin declared a state of emergency to provide access to National Guard troops in a state still recovering from the devastating effects of the remnants of Hurricane Irene. Culverts and storm drainage basins in some spots have been cleared of debris. Power outages: 14,470.

VIRGINIA

Thousands in Virginia are without power as former Hurricane Sandy began moving away from the state. There are about 100,000 people without electricity in northern Virginia. Utilities have brought in additional crews to assist with restoration efforts. Power outages: 123,460.

WASHINGTON, D.C.

Taxis that originate in Washington are authorized to add an emergency flat rate of $15 per trip because of Hurricane Sandy, starting Monday. The price is supposed to expire at noon Tuesday, but can be extended if considered necessary. The capital area's transit system shut down rail service for the first time since 2003. Power outages: 5,500.

WEST VIRGINIA

Officials said a woman was killed in a storm-related traffic accident. A spokeswoman for Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin said about 5 inches of snow had fallen in the area of Tucker County where the crash occurred, making road conditions treacherous. Tomblin declared a state of emergency for the state on Monday. West Virginia Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management Director Jimmy Gianato said conditions are expected to be at their worst overnight and early Tuesday before the storm moves on. Power outages: 49,000.

WISCONSIN

The Village of Pleasant Prairie along Lake Michigan near the Illinois border has advised residents in about 265 homes to voluntarily evacuate Tuesday morning because of the possibility of dangerously high waves and flooding. Lori Getter of the Wisconsin Division of Emergency Management said waves of 14-18 feet are forecast for Lake Michigan.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) ? A string of New Jersey's barrier islands were cut off from the mainland by storm surges. Crashing waves shattered part of a landmark fishing pier in Maryland. And dangerous winds forced the busy port in Portland, Maine, to close.

Before Hurricane Sandy knocked out power to New York's famous skyline or flooded lower Manhattan, the storm came howling into dozens of other communities across the Eastern Seaboard, bringing relentless winds, drenching rain and heavy, punishing surf.

And the danger is far from over. After merging with a cold-weather system just before making landfall near Atlantic City, the combined superstorm could still cause inland flooding and more widespread power outages as it spins along a path expected to take it over Pennsylvania before turning toward New England.

In New York City and New Jersey's Sandy Hook, the storm arrived with record storm surges ? walls of fast-moving water that put long stretches of coastline at risk.

"It was nerve-racking for a while, before the storm hit," said Don Schweikert, a bed-and-breakfast owner in Cape May, N.J., who stayed in his property as Sandy made landfall about 30 miles to the northeast. "Everything was rattling."

Beach communities from Ocean City, Md., to Dartmouth, Mass., were under mandatory evacuation orders at points during the storm. The effects extended beyond the beaches and out to sea.

Off the North Carolina coast, the storm sunk the HMS Bounty, a replica of an 18th-century sailing ship that was built for the 1962 Marlon Brando movie "Mutiny on the Bounty." Fourteen crew members were rescued by helicopter from rubber lifeboats. Another was found unresponsive in the waves, and the captain was still missing late Monday.

Authorities imposed a curfew on Virginia's exposed Chincoteague Island, where most of the roads were underwater and the five-mile causeway connecting it to the mainland had to be closed.

As the storm moved north, its heavy surf ripped out more than 100 feet of a fishing pier in the resort town of Ocean City, Md.

"Probably 99.99 percent, if not 100 percent of the people that have ever come to Ocean City, have made it to the pier," said former Ocean City Mayor Jim Mathias.

Also in Maryland, a power outage at a water-treatment plant resulted in a sewage overflow of 2 million gallons per hour into the main stem of the Little Patuxent River. Because of the severity of the storm, officials said they could take no immediate action to mitigate the damage.

In Maine, Gov. Paul LePage ordered the Portland port to be closed because of the danger of gusts that topped 63 mph in the city.

Back in New Jersey, the storm rolled ashore with winds gusting at close to 90 mph in some spots. Barrier islands along the state's shoreline were subject to mandatory evacuations, but not everyone went.

That angered Gov. Chris Christie, who called people who chose to stay "stupid and selfish" and bashed Atlantic City Mayor Lorenzo Langford for allowing residents to stay in shelters in the city rather than forcing them onto the mainland.

Langford did not return a message from The Associated Press.

At the height of the storm, communities on the state's barrier islands ? including Atlantic City and Ocean City ? were largely flooded and access in and out was cut off.

By late Monday afternoon, Christie was telling people who were still on the islands to stay in place until Tuesday with the hopes that rescuers could get to them then.

On New York's Long Island, floodwaters swamped cars and downed trees. A police car was lost during an attempt to rescue 14 people from the Fire Island resort.

In places like New Jersey, at least one more high tide was expected to bring water sloshing into coastal areas again before officials could get a good look at just how bad the damage was.

In Connecticut, authorities spent Monday night trying to get some 360,000 coastal residents to evacuate ahead of floods still expected there.

"The water's got no place to go," said Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch. "It's been pushed all the way up the coast into this funnel."

Safe online? Use bogus details, says IT security expert ? The ...

In the modern world the majority of business owners want to give their firm the most exposure possible and one way of doing that is by signing up to social networking sites.

Services such as Facebook and Twitter have become invaluable marketing aids and, along with cloud computing and IT outsourcing, helped to take many firms into whole new areas of business.

However, the key snag with these kinds of sites is that they are often used by cybercriminals seeking out easy prey.

But how do you stop your personal details falling into the wrong hands? Well according to Andy Smith, internet security chief at the Cabinet Office, you should only post accurate details on trusted government sites and use fake information on social networks.

His comments have sparked anger amongst a large number of internet users and public figures, with Labour MP Helen Goodman describing the suggestion as being ?totally outrageous?.

She told the BBC: ?This is the kind of behaviour that, in the end, promotes crime. It is exactly what we don?t want. We want more security online. It?s anonymity which facilitates cyber-bullying, the abuse of children.

?I was genuinely shocked that a public official could say such a thing.?

However, Mr Smith has stood by his comments, arguing that putting real information on social networking sites makes the likelihood of you being targeted by hackers greater.

He told a Parliament and the Internet Conference in Westminster: ?When you put information on the internet do not use your real name, your real date of birth.

?When you are putting information on social networking sites don?t put real combinations of information, because it can be used against you.

?When you are interacting with government, or professional organisations ? people who you know are going to protect your information ? then obviously you are going to use the right stuff.

His comments were by backed by the chairman of the Digital Policy Alliance Lord Errol, who claimed he always puts his date of birth down as ?April 1st 1900? when asked for it online.

Mr Smith?s comments come in the same month that study by security software developer Splashdata found that people are continuing to put their personal data at risk by relying on easy to hack passwords.

The survey found that the most popular password remains ?password?, while ?123456? and ?12345678? are also used regularly.

It seems that people are continuously using the same passwords for a number of different online accounts.

With things such as email, social networks and online bank accounts to manage, people do not want to have to remember a plethora of different password combinations and use the same easy to recall one across the board.

This is understandable given that research from Experian found that the average person in the UK now has 26 online accounts, but it means that a hacker only has to work out one password in order to gain access to a number of accounts.

Inquiry hears about safe overfilled with cash

Businessman Elio Pagliarulo, seen in an image taken from the closed circuit televison, testifies at the Charbonneau inquiry looking into corruption in the Quebec construction industry Monday, October 29, 2012 in Montreal.THE CANADIAN PRESS/Ryan Remiorz

MONTREAL - A man who held several roles in the Harper government has testified about bizarre financial dealings he witnessed in his previous career in Montreal municipal politics ? like the safe so stuffed with cash it wouldn't close.

Martin Dumont, who worked as a policy adviser in the office of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and as a senior aide for cabinet ministers Diane Ablonczy, Jim Prentice and Josee Verner from 2007 to 2010, testified at Quebec's public inquiry Monday.

He shared memories of his earlier days in municipal politics, when he worked for the party of Mayor Gerald Tremblay, before he left for Ottawa.

Dumont recalled his frustration at witnessing abnormally high prices on public works contracts and said that, when he began inquiring into them, he was told by civil servants to stop asking so many questions.

He remembered working at a political fundraiser where the mayor's party got large, but legal, donation cheques from members of the construction industry ? including one with extensive ties to the most powerful figures in the Mafia.

He also shared vivid memories of the man known as "Mr. Three Per Cent" ? Bernard Trepanier, the partisan fundraising official accused of collecting kickbacks from construction companies on behalf of the mayor's Union Montreal party. Trepanier faces criminal charges, including fraud, but none of the allegations against him have been proven in court.

Dumont said Trepanier frequently shut the blinds and door when meeting people in his office. He said he was once called in because Trepanier had a problem: he couldn't close the door to a safe in the office, because it was just too full.

"It was the most money I've ever seen in my life," Dumont said.

"I was pretty shocked... I expected to see fives, 10s and 20s (in bills gathered from fundraising events)."

An inquiry lawyer asked him what denominations he saw instead. Dumont said he remembered the colours of the bills ? an array of tones usually associated with far larger denominations, ranging from $50 to $1,000: "What I remember is the colours: Red, brown, pink."

He said he and Trepanier, pooling their strength, managed to force the safe closed together. He said he joked with Trepanier afterward that he might want to consider getting a bigger safe.

Dumont testified that, to his surprise, a few days later there actually was a bigger safe in the room, located in the offices of the Union Montreal party.

He also described a memorable encounter with Niccolo Milioto.

Milioto is a construction boss seen, on decade-old police surveillance video, repeatedly exchanging cash with the top figures in the Rizzuto crime family. He has been described during inquiry testimony as a middleman between the construction industry, the Mob, and the mayor's party.

"(Milioto) said, 'You can call me Mr. Sidewalk,'" Dumont testified.

"I think I butchered his family name. So he told me, 'Don't worry about it, just call me Mr. Sidewalk.'"

That was in 2004, well before Dumont went to work in Ottawa. The ongoing Quebec probe is not exploring the fundraising of federal political parties.

But it has heard a torrent of allegations about wrongdoing at the municipal level ? and there were many more allegations on Monday.

The inquiry heard that the City of Montreal's second most-powerful politician, after the mayor, was among a number of corrupt municipal officials.

A witness from the construction industry said Monday that Frank Zampino, who was once the No. 2 at city hall and the right-hand man to Tremblay, was on the take.

Zampino, the former head of the city's executive committee, has left politics. He was arrested earlier this year and now faces fraud charges.

The testimony against was delivered earlier Monday by Elio Pagliarulo ? a former construction-industry insider who said he ran a loansharking business in partnership with construction magnate Paolo Catania.

Pagliarulo said he personally delivered $300,000 in cash through a middleman, Catania, and the money was destined for Zampino. He said the payments were delivered in three installments of $100,000 and that he saw Zampino one of the times he brought Catania the cash, around 2006.

"I took (the cash) from my personal account," Pagliarulo testified. "I knew in advance that these particular numbers were for Mr. Zampino."

He said he was also aware of $200,000 in renovations done to Zampino's home ? specifically to his kitchen. Pagliarulo was testifying about the corruption, Mafia ties and bid-rigging he witnessed and participated in during his days working with the Catania construction empire.

He said he had a spectacular falling out with his old friends several years ago. He said he owed them money after a business deal went wrong.

He said he was kidnapped for three hours and beaten up. He said his teeth and face were so badly damaged that he needed facial-reconstruction surgery.

He told the inquiry that funeral flowers were also sent to his family home, as a message: pay, or else.

It wasn't the first time he'd witnessed a violent attitude in the industry. He said that when he was on better terms with the Catanias, they discussed the possibility of torching a rival company's vehicles.

As for corruption, Pagliarulo said bribes were rampant and in one case it consisted of paying down the mortage on the house of a municipal engineer.

An inquiry lawyer asked Pagliarulo how far the Catanias would go to maintain their position in the construction industry.

Pagliarulo referred to his own kidnapping and beating.

"If I was his best friend at the time, and look what he did to me, you can just imagine what he'd do to a stranger," he said.

"In the community, you don't mess around with these two people," he said, referring to the father and son team that built the business. "They're connected to a crime family."

He also described lavish parties thrown by his old associates ? including a birthday party he says was attended by Gloria Gaynor, best known for the disco hit, "I Will Survive."

Giants are using Tigers' formula

That game is starting pitching, and the Giants' Vogelsong has been the best

OPINION

Tony DeMarco

DETROIT - The Detroit Tigers brought their superstar ace and microscopic postseason rotation ERA into this World Series.

But the San Francisco Giants are on the verge of their second championship in three Octobers by beating the Tigers at their own game.

Game 3 was Ryan Vogelsong's turn, and it ended exactly the same way as Game 2 ? a 2-0 shutout.

You've probably heard more about the other members of the Giants rotation than Vogelsong ? not to mention the starter they've turned into a stealth setup man. But this postseason is turning into Vogelsong's personal coming-out party.

In a well-traveled career, the 35-year-old right-hander was a Giants fifth-round draft choice in 1998, then was sent away in 2001 in a deal for starter Jason Schmidt. He surfaced with the Pirates for parts of four seasons, went through arm surgery, played a few seasons with two different Japanese League teams, then passed through the Phillies and Angels organizations before landing with the Giants in 2011 as a non-roster invitee.

"And the rest is history,'' Giants general manager Brian Sabean said.

Such as leading the NL in ERA for a while this season and landing on the NL All-Star team. And now you'll find Vogelsong in the postseason record book, too.

In 24.2 postseason innings over four starts, Vogelsong's ERA is 1.09. The last time anybody went lower in a postseason was Orel Hershiser in 1987 (1.05 ERA in 42.2 innings).

With 5 2/3 scoreless ? albeit testy ? innings on Saturday, Vogelsong ducked under the mark of another postseason legend ? Curt Schilling's 1.13 ERA with the 2001 Arizona Diamondbacks.

Vogelsong has allowed one or fewer runs in all four of his postseason starts (and his last seven, dating back to the regular season). The only other pitchers to do that in one postseason are Schilling, Burt Hooton (1981) and John ?Blue Moon? Odom (1972).

But Vogelsong only added on to what Barry Zito and Madison Bumgarner did in the first two games. The trio has allowed only one earned run in 18.1 innings, with each coming away with a victory. You have to go back 75 years for the last time that happened ? by the 1937 New York Yankees trio of Lefty Gomez, Red Ruffing and Monte Pearson.

This was Vogelsong's most troublesome of his four playoff outings, as he put nine runners on, but then pitched well in traffic.

"I didn't think my stuff was as good as in my NLCS start,'' Vogelsong said. "I really just tried to hit Buster's glove as many times as I could. When the guys are playing defense behind you, it encourages you to just put the ball in play.''

And when you've been where Vogelsong has been in his career, it makes a game's tougher moments a little easier to get through. Double-play ground balls got him out of two-on, one-out jams in the first and third innings, but that was minor compared with facing Miguel Cabrera with two outs and the bases loaded in the fifth.

"Right now, he's the best hitter in the game,'' Vogelsong said. "I just tried to make pitches there. It's a lot easier facing him with two outs. I made a good pitch, and he popped it up. This is my first World Series. I've been waiting for this since I was 5 years old, and I wasn't going to go down without a fight, that's for sure.''

Cabrera's popout continued the trend of Giants pitchers? mastering the Tigers' top hitters. Cabrera is 2 for 9 with an RBI in this series. After an 0-for-4, two-strikeout game, Prince Fielder is 1 for 10 and has hit into two double plays.

The Giants aren't the first team to attempt to attack Cabrera by pounding him inside, even off the plate inside. But they've succeeded at it best. Fielder's struggles are deeper, as he has impatiently expanded his strike zone.

"They're great hitters,'' Sabean said. "I certainly understand why with (Justin) Verlander and those two guys, they'd be the favorites in this series. But the game is funny. You still have to compete inning to inning, and we're winning a lot of innings.

"We were ready for this series because of the two teams we played (in the NL playoffs ? the Nationals and Cardinals). Those are two pretty good offensive teams. I hate to use the phrase 'battle-tested' because we're not in the military. But our guys were ready to pitch the way they have needed to pitch, the way they still need to pitch.''

Superstorm causes major entertainment disruption

David Letterman didn't get many laughs for his monologue Monday: The "Late Show" host told his jokes to a mostly empty Ed Sullivan Theater.

Jimmy Fallon taped "Late Night" without an audience, too, as Hurricane Sandy disrupted a wide swath of the New York area's bustling entertainment industry.

City officials said that all film permits for Monday and Tuesday were revoked because of the hurricane and associated safety precautions.

"There will be no city authorized outdoor filming within the five boroughs," read a statement Monday from the Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting.

Production on at least nine shows was affected, including "Gossip Girl," ''Person of Interest" and "Elementary," according to the Los Angeles Times. "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report" also took Monday night off, and each of Broadway's 40 theaters will be dark through Tuesday.

The storm forced Focus Features to cancel the New York premiere of "Anna Karenina," which was set for Tuesday. A studio spokeswoman said they will reschedule.

Concerts planned for New York and New Jersey were canceled or postponed, including performances by Journey, comedian Louis C.K., and the "Freedom to Love Now" show featuring Rufus Wainwright and fun., which is now set for spring of 2013.

Radio City Music Hall was shuttered until Wednesday. Carnegie Hall postponed concerts planned for Tuesday. Off-Broadway shows and even national tours of Broadway shows like "Anything Goes," currently in Wilmington, Del., closed their doors.

It was the most detrimental storm for the theater community since the threat of Hurricane Irene in late August 2011 prompted producers to cancel matinee and evening performances on both a Saturday and Sunday.

East Coast charity galas were also canceled, and fashion designer Prabal Gurung postponed the unveiling of his anticipated collection for Target until next week.

Some network schedules were shaken up by the widespread power outages cutting into the available TV audience in the East.

CBS planned to air repeats instead of new episodes Monday of "How I Met Your Mother," ''Partners," ''2 Broke Girls" and "Mike & Molly." A CBS News special on Sandy was to follow at 10 p.m. EDT, pre-empting "Hawaii Five-O."

The CW also was set to air repeats of "90201" and "Gossip Girl."

ABC said it was sticking to its schedule of new episodes of "Dancing With the Stars" and "Castle." Fox was to air a previously scheduled rerun of "The X Factor," which had been planned if the San Francisco-Detroit World Series ended, as it did, in four games.

NBC did not immediately respond concerning the status of its Monday schedule, which included "The Voice" and "Revolution."

"Good Morning America," the "Today" show and "CBS This Morning" were expected to air live as usual Tuesday with extensive storm coverage.

Sandy took a toll on the movie box office even before it made landfall. Ticket sales were down more than 11 percent compared to the same weekend last year, said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com. This weekend's top film, "Argo," collected $12.1 million. The top film during the same weekend in 2011, "Puss in Boots," earned $34 million.

KLUTCHclub Subscription Review | The Budget Fashionista

If you follow my posts here at The Budget Fashionista, then you?re probably aware of my monthly box subscription obsession. I love monthly beauty boxes because a) mail is fun and b) trying new products is fun. I was tickled pink (my husband calls me a ?grandma? for using that expression, by the way) to discover a new monthly box subscription that?s a little different from the rest: KLUTCHclub. Clarification: Different equals good.

While it does include some beauty items, KLUTCHclub?s ultimate focus is holistic health, fitness and wellness products. Self-admission: I don?t exactly adhere to my workout schedule every week, and I occasionally indulge in not-so-healthy food items. With that said, I do take pride in my otherwise-healthy lifestyle decisions. I decided to give KLUTCHclub a go. Here are the deets (and some pictures) from my first box:

What is KLUTCHclub? As mentioned above, KLUTCHclub is a monthly subscription box that?s filled with all kinds of health and wellness goodies. The products are delivered in a box straight to your door every month. The service?s ultimate focus is holistic health, so you?ll find organic skin care products, nutritional supplements/bars/drinks and items that?ll motivate you in the fitness department.

What?s the Cost? The monthly subscription is $18. You can also subscribe to a year?s worth of boxes and the price drops to $16, or at three months to $17. Each box contains at least $50 or more worth of products, so you do get your money?s worth.

What Kinds of Things Come in the Box?

KlutchClub Review: Throw a Health Fit with KLUTCHclubs Holistic Monthly Box Subscription

You?ll find everything from fitness DVDs to all-natural energy bars to holistic teas and organic skincare products. KLUTCHclub fills their boxes with new products from niche brands, so you?ll definitely learn about new products and businesses. My first box (which arrived in October), included Yurbuds (sport earphones made for fitness lovers), DeVita Natural Eyeliner (chemical-free mineral eyeliner) and Hungershield (natural appetite-control drink mix), among others. You can find out what was in past boxes by clicking here.

How Big are the Products? Some of the products are full-sized, while others are sample sizes. There seems to be enough to get a true feel for the products, though.

Additional info: There are two separate boxes?one for women and another for men. There seems to be some overlap in products for both, but separating men and women allows for better product targeting.

If you want to check out KLUTCHclub for yourself, visit their Web site and mosey around.

people - happy

EFT Tapping is a positive and unique form of therapy that can be used on your child or teen who suffers from anxiety or emotional problems. These types of concerns are fairly common at this juncture in life and could affect one out of every eight kids. If gone unchecked, these issues can cause difficulty in their family life, with their friends, and at school. The tapping method is quick and easy to master and can help them to overcome physical and emotional issues. The following is some helpful information on how to heal your kids and teens through the tapping method.

What is EFT Tapping?

Watching your child or teen suffer and go through emotional distress can be overwhelming and painful to you, the parent. Emotional and behavioral issues are typically caused by an anxiety, danger or some kind of threat they may be experiencing in life, and it can make children unable to function logically. Tapping works along the same lines as acupuncture but without the use of painful needles. The theory behind?emotional freedom techniques?is based on getting rid of the negative emotions that are in the body and replaces them with positive energy in a matter of minutes.

chakra-still
How Does Tapping Work?

The child or teen can begin by assessing the issue and summarizing the problem at hand. It then gets ranked a level of intensity and how serious the issue seems to them. Before the tapping process begins, positive affirmations are discussed. As the affirmation is being said out loud, the light finger tapping can begin. The various meridian points consist of the inner eyebrow, on the side of the eye, underneath the eye, nose, chin, collarbone and head. As the areas are tapped, positive energy is released and takes over the negative thoughts and feelings.

Eleven Ways EFT Tapping Can Help Your Child or Teen

There is no limit to the variety of problems that EFT tapping can help combat. This form of therapy can be used on children, teens and adults that suffer from:

  • Anxiety over starting a new school
  • A child or teen that is being bullied
  • Being afraid to talk in public
  • Overcoming physical and mental challenges

EFT for Teens and Children

When a problem begins to interfere with the daily life of your child or teen, it is your responsibility as her parent to help her find a resolution to cope with and work through these problems. The EFT tapping technique is simple to learn, and your child can teach herself to do it on her own when she is experiencing a difficult situation or anxious thoughts and feelings in everyday life. Parents can also master this skill and tap along with the child. The EFT method has been known to be a long lasting technique that conquers the issue permanently. It also works better than alternative forms of therapy like hypnosis or medication.

This technique is a positive tool to help children and teens learn to overcome common fears, anxieties, worries and serious traumas. The EFT tapping method can also help them build self-esteem by providing them with a safe outlet to get rid of the negative energy. If you have tried other methods of therapy, or even medications that have not been successful long term, the EFT tapping method may be your best solution for everyone involved.

Vodafone UK spoiler campaign targets EE 4G launch

LONDON (Reuters) - Vodafone wrapped ads around British national newspapers on Friday touting the quality of its network ahead of rival EE's launch of next-generation 4G services next week.

The campaign, in The Daily Telegraph, The Independent and The Guardian nationals and in the Metro and City AM freesheets, cost more than 4.5 million pounds, according to a source close to the company.

It will be supported by outdoor advertising.

Since the arrival of smartphones, network quality has come to the fore as a point of differentiation between telecom operators, both in Britain and in other markets, according to analyst Thomas Wehmeier at Informa Telecoms and Media.

"All of these fancy devices that customers have, whether smartphone or tablets, simply don't work unless you have a decent level of connectivity," he said.

He said there had been little difference in network quality between UK operators but this would change with the arrival of 4G.

"The transition to 4G is significant because it opens the door for somebody to establish a beachhead as the UK's biggest and best 4G operator," he said.

EE, jointly owned by France Telecom and Deutsche Telekom, will launch Britain's first 4G network on Tuesday, offering five times faster connections than 3G.

It will be supported by a campaign costing tens of millions of pounds fronted by film actor Kevin Bacon.

Vodafone, as well as Telefonica's O2 and Three, must wait until next year to launch their own 4G services once they have obtained the necessary spectrum.

Wehmeier said Vodafone's campaign was a defensive move to stop customers who are willing to pay a premium for 4G defecting to EE.

"Those four to five months really are going to give EE a chance to attract a very interesting segment of customers," he said.

What You Can Do To Improve Your Self Improvement - ProjectPB ...

You may be at a point in your life where if you do not change a negative behavior, you will start to lose relationships that mean a lot to you. What is the best place to start when it comes to self improvement? The below article provides some useful ideas on how you can invest in your own well-being and personal growth.

Do some reading on personal development. A good book can provide you with the information that you need to get started on your journey toward a new you. Many personal development books are poorly written, so pick one that has good reviews.

TIP! Make every day of your life the best that you can. Top yourself every day.

Don?t ignore your body?s signals when you are prioritizing your personal development goals. Your body has a natural intelligence and will let you know when you need to eat to curb hunger, to drink to satisfy thirst, to stop eating because you?re full, and other needs to which you should give attention. When you take care of yourself, you will find less medical problems in the future. If you disregard your body?s intelligence, you might find in the future that it will not be able to take care of you.

A great self improvement tip is to always use love to fuel your faith. This will help you focus on the things that are truly important. You will also make decisions guided by your core beliefs. Serve others when they need help, and commit yourself to doing things that demonstrate your love.

Everyone needs to exercise, not just people who want to lose weight. There are many physical reasons for the need to exercise. It stimulates different areas of your body into producing hormones that make us happier and calmer.

TIP! Incorporate your belief system into daily living. Everyone has certain beliefs that reinforce their sense of self at the core.

Are you causing yourself unnecessary stress? It?s best to train yourself to cope with your daily stress, and it begins with analyzing every situation where you tend to feel strained. If you make a mistake, own up to it, fix it, and move on. See the glass as half-full rather than half-empty.

A great self help tip to deal with anxiety is to accompany a friend to the movies. You will be out and about but you don?t have to talk a lot or even see who you?re with most of the time. It can also be an effective way for you to become more comfortable with being near a large group of people.

Getting healthy is a major factor of personal development. Eating right and working out are part of the equation, but motivation is the real key. When it?s important for you to stay healthy and you do so, you will feel better and it can help improve other areas of your life.

TIP! Don?t waste your energy on the small things. If you focus all of your thoughts on the things that really matter and quit dwelling on the negative things that do not matter at all, you are sure to find a greater inner peace.

Don?t overexert yourself physically when you are trying to achieve your goal. Although you should always try your best, you should also be aware of your limitations. You should take care of yourself when you are working towards a goal. If you sacrifice the needs of your body, it will greatly hinder your personal development.

You must determine what you would like to achieve in your life. Once you?ve done this, get out there and do it. Just sitting around doing nothing to make the life you want actually happen will get you nowhere. Take action, and turn your dreams into reality.

Instead of bragging about how many things you?ve earned in your life, try to ask other people about what they?ve earned in their life and what they?re proud of. You will be amazed to hear some of the wonderful and interesting things the people around you have done in their lives, and you will earn new respect for them by understanding their true character.

TIP! You should always strive to be the best in your area. Follow your passions if you want to be truly great.

Learn to care for others for a shift in your own personal growth. Knowing what it means to care for and help others, by making the sacrifices within yourself, can greatly benefit your inner character. When you can decide to make a sacrifice that will help another person, and it doesn?t end up jeopardizing your well being, then you will become the person you?ve been searching for.

Personal development can be a difficult and laborious process, but it?s worth every second. However, if you make a good effort and establish a strong support system, you are sure to be successful in your self improvement journey. The tips in this article will serve as a good starting point.

Don?t be disorganized anywhere in your life. When you are organized, you will improve your confidence and feel accomplished in many different areas of your life. An additional benefit is that the stress you felt from disorganization will be eliminated. Having everything in its rightful place will give you a sense of calm and ease.

Sanchez set to take the mound for trailing Tigers

DETROIT (AP) ? Justin Verlander already lost. Doug Fister pitched gamely, but his fine effort wasn't good enough either.

Now, with their World Series hopes slipping away, the Detroit Tigers turn to Anibal Sanchez ? the least physically imposing member of their postseason rotation.

"We need to start over," Sanchez said. "We need to forget what happened in San Francisco. I know we've got the talent. That's why we're here. We've got a pretty good team, so we're going to fight it to the end."

Sanchez was acquired to help the Tigers make the playoffs ? they were in the middle of a tough AL Central race with the Chicago White Sox when he arrived in a deal with Miami shortly before the trade deadline. The right-hander held up his end of the bargain, but now Detroit is playing for even higher stakes, and Saturday night's start in Game 3 of the World Series against San Francisco might be his most important test yet.

Although he went only 4-6 as a Tiger in the regular season, Sanchez began to pitch better down the stretch. That carried over into the postseason, where he's 1-1 with a 1.35 ERA.

The last time Sanchez pitched, he shut out the New York Yankees for seven innings in Game 2 of the AL championship series. That's the type of performance the Tigers were hoping for when they traded top pitching prospect Jacob Turner to the Marlins and acquired Sanchez and second baseman Omar Infante.

"I had seen him pitch on TV and stuff, but I didn't really know the young man," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. "Once he got in his comfort zone, I think he's done absolutely very, very well. He's a very, very good pitcher."

The 6-foot Sanchez is 5 inches shorter than Verlander and 8 inches shorter than Fister. He was shaky after first joining the Tigers, but he posted a 2.43 ERA in his final six regular-season starts.

"I know I've got pretty bad starts in the beginning of my trade," Sanchez said. "I didn't know too much, the hitters, but after that I make my adjustment."

The trade for Sanchez was Detroit's last big move of the season. The Tigers were more than willing to trade a potential future star to acquire two players who could help them compete for a World Series title this year.

Detroit's starting rotation was marvelous against Oakland in the division series and the Yankees in the ALCS. But the Tigers were stung in the World Series opener by the Giants, losing 8-3 when Pablo Sandoval hit three home runs in a game Verlander started.

In Game 2, Fister took a line drive off his head but still managed to pitch into the seventh inning. San Francisco won 2-0.

Right-hander Max Scherzer looked like Detroit's best pitcher at times during the second half of the season, but his throwing shoulder acted up in September, so he's been slotted for Game 4 during the postseason, starting once per series.

So Sanchez is in line to pitch Saturday, with the season seemingly on the line and the prospect of a short series hanging over the proceedings.

"He's pitched pretty well against the Giants in the past, and obviously we're saving Scherzer to give him a little more time to keep recouping a little bit," Leyland said. "But Sanchez has really gotten acclimated here in Detroit. I expect him to pitch a good game. The key is we're going to have to get some runs on the board, obviously."

Sanchez shut out the Giants last year and held them to a run in seven innings in an outing this May. But in his most recent start against them ? on May 24 ? he was touched up for five runs.

"He'll throw any pitch at any time. He throws quality strikes," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "We've had our tough times against him. He's a good pitcher."

The Tigers faced elimination once this postseason already, when Verlander shut out Oakland in the fifth game of the division series. In fact, Detroit has been staring down the prospect of a disappointing finish seemingly all year. For much of the season, the Tigers were underachievers before they overtook the White Sox in September.

Then they went on their postseason run before encountering one more difficult roadblock.

If they're going to overcome the Giants, they'd better turn this series around soon.

"I think everybody is going to be relaxed," Sanchez said. "We know we are home, we play really good here. We're going to keep doing the same."

LG Display posts first profit in two years on phone, tablet panels

SEOUL (Reuters) - LG Display Co Ltd reported its first quarterly profit in two years on Friday as sales of its screens used in Apple Inc's iPad and iPhone offset weak demand from TV manufacturers, the South Korean panel maker's biggest revenue source.

LG Display, which vies with Samsung Electronics Co Ltd's panel unit for the top position in liquid crystal display (LCD) flat screens globally, reported 253 billion won ($230 million) in operating profit for its July-September third quarter.

That was a tad below an average forecast for a 265 billion won profit in a poll of 13 analysts by Thomson Reuters.

The profit, LG's first after seven straight quarters of losses, compared with a 492 billion won loss a year earlier and a 26 billion won loss in the preceding three months.

"We expect profitability to improve further in the fourth quarter, as a host of new mobile devices will launch and increase panel demand," the firm said in its earnings statement.

LG said it expected LCD panel prices to remain stable in the current quarter, and its flat-screen shipments to rise by a high single digit percentage quarter-on-quarter.

LG Display shares have jumped about 37 percent in the past three months, outperforming a 6 percent rise in the benchmark KOSPI index, on expectations for better fourth-quarter earnings as the company ties its fortunes more tightly to Apple.

Barclays expects LG's revenue from panel supplies to Apple and Amazon.com Inc to jump nearly 70 percent to 2.1 trillion won worth in the fourth quarter from the third quarter, due to solid demand for the iPhone 5, iPad mini and Amazon's Kindle tablet computer.

LG's new and thinner display -- its in-cell touch screen panel, which is used in the iPhone 5 -- costs 40 percent more than that of conventional smartphone panels, according to Nomura Securities. Analysts at Korea Investment & Securities expect panel sales to Apple to rise to around 27 percent of LG's total revenue in the second half of this year from 16 percent in the first half.

Shares of LG Display closed down 1.2 percent prior to the results announcement, versus a 1.7 percent fall in the broader market. ($1 = 1098.2000 Korean won)
