British, French Helicopters Strike Gadhafi's Troops

British Apache and French attack helicopters struck targets for the first time in NATO's campaign in Libya, hitting Moammar Gadhafi's troops early Saturday near a key coastal oil city, the alliance said.

The action was a significant step-up in NATO's operations and a major boost to Libyan rebels on the ground, just a day after rebel fighters forced government troops from three western towns and broke the siege of a fourth in yet another erosion of Gadhafi's power since the eruption in mid-February of the uprising to end his 42-year rule.

NATO said the helicopters struck Gadhafi troops attempting to hide in populated areas, military vehicles and equipment. Lt. Gen. Charles Bouchard, commander of the Libya operation, said the engagement "demonstrates the unique capabilities brought to bear by attack helicopters."

The Apaches hit two targets near the coastal city of Brega, according to a statement from the Ministry of Defense in London. It said they took off from HMS Ocean, stationed off the Libyan coast and returned safely after completing their mission in the early morning hours.

British Maj. Gen. Nick Pope said the Apaches targeted a radar installation and a military checkpoint. "Hellfire missiles and 30mm cannon were used to destroy the targets," he said.

Separately from the helicopters, Royal Air Force ground attack aircraft destroyed another military installation near Brega and two ammunition bunkers at the large Waddan depot in central Libya, Pope said.

Brega is of strategic importance to Libya's oil industry and lies on the coastal road along the Mediterranean that leads to the capital, Tripoli. In the early days of the uprising against Gadhafi, it went back and forth between rebel and loyalist hands, but later the frontline settled to the east of the city, leaving Brega under control of Gadhafi's forces.

Waddan lies southwest of Brega, about 140 miles (220 kilometers) from the coastline.

The French helicopters took off from the helicopter transport ship Tonnerre in the Mediterranean, said Col. Thierry Burkhard. He said they struck 15 military vehicles and 5 military command buildings, without identifying the sites or their location.

Burkhard said the French helicopters came under light-arms fire but were not hit or damaged. The operation was aimed at putting "additional pressure on the Gadhafi forces who continue to threaten the civilian population," he said.

Until now, NATO has relied on attack jets, generally flying above 15,000 feet (4,500 meters) ? nearly three miles (five kilometers) high and pounding Gadhafi targets in relentless overnight bombings.

But the helicopters are a game-changer, giving the alliance a key advantage in close-up combat, flying at much lower altitudes.

British Defense Secretary Liam Fox said Saturday that the "use of the attack helicopters is a logical extension" in NATO's campaign and indicated more would be used in the future.

"This gives us a chance to target new targets in a way we weren't able to do," Fox said from Singapore, where he was attending an Asian security conference. "What it does show is our willing to use the range of assets we have to keep the pressure up. We will continue with the methods we have to degrade his (Gadhafi's) command and control, to degrade his supplies."

The helicopter strikes came after Libyan rebels on Friday won control of four towns in the western Nafusa mountain range, where government forces have besieged and randomly shelled rebel-held areas for months.

After weeks of siege, the rebels managed to force government troops out of Yifran and also took neighboring Galaa, said Col. Jumaa Ibrahim of the region's rebel military council. The rebels also pushed government fighters from Shakshuk and Qasr al-Haj, near a key road that runs along the mountain range's northern edge. The latter holds an important power station for local towns.

Ibrahim said rebel forces took the towns on Thursday then moved north to clash with Gadhafi forces in the village of Bir Ayyad on Friday. There were no reports of casualties.

The small rebel force in the western mountains is unlikely to threaten Gadhafi's hold on Tripoli, 45 miles (70 kilometers) northwest, but the victories could bring relief to local residents by opening up roads between their communities. The western mountain population is tiny compared to the large rebel-held territories in east Libya.

The conflict in Libya is nearly four months along, but the situation on the ground appears mostly stalemated. NATO airstrikes have kept the outgunned rebels from being overrun, but the rebels have been unable to mount an effective offensive against Gadhafi's better equipped armed forces.

Gadhafi's regime has been slowly crumbling from within. A significant number of army officers and several Cabinet ministers have defected, and most have expressed support for the opposition, but Gadhafi's hold on power shows little sign of loosening.

Gadhafi has been seen in public rarely and heard even less frequently since a NATO airstrike on his compound killed one of his sons on April 30. Questions are arising about the physical and mental state of the 69-year-old dictator, who has ruled Libya since 1969.

Rebels have turned down initiatives calling for cease-fires, insisting that Gadhafi and his sons must relinquish power and leave the country.

Painting Floors - DIY Home Repairs

Painting floors, whether they are concrete or wood is easy. The most important thing is that you must know how to match the paint to the job you are doing. We have said this before and we will say it again but preparation is the key. Many times when painting floors specialty coatings and primers are required. For example, concrete floors are naturally alkaline. Alkaline can degrade paint and the moisture that comes through concrete can cause paint to peel in a very short time. Let?s take a look at painting floors and different flooring requirements.

Painting Concrete Floors

Most newer home construction have moisture and vapor locks installed beneath the floor which prevent moisture from penetrating through the floor may prohibit you from painting it.

Being unable to stop moisture from coming through your and a concrete surface must be clean of dust grit and any loose paint. In other words the paint adheres to the concrete and anything that gets in between the paint in the concrete will cause the paint to lose hold and peel. You can seal cracks in the concrete floor with caulks that are made for concrete. Larger cracks should be repaired with a concrete patch kit. These often come in the form of epoxy kits. Once you have the floor clean of dust and grit you should clean the concrete with a 10% solution of muriatic acid. Mop up the acid until dry and then repeat the process. Then wash the floor with detergent and water rents and allow to dry.

Choosing a paint for your concrete floor is obviously very important. There are some latex based paints made for flooring. They generally offer the same benefits as latex wall paint, such as cleaning and cleanup. Epoxy-based paints are formulated for concrete floors and are very durable. Epoxy based paints offer flexibility when it comes to the overall appearance of the floor. Many concrete floor plates consist of two parts. First you apply the epoxy colored paint then you sprinkle colored paint chips into the paint. This not only makes them look good and adds a measure of traction for the floor

You will want to use a thick nap roller to paint concrete. Use an extension on your roller to apply pressure. Wait for the top coat to dry as a second coat is essential. You may find that paint on your concrete floor dries a little slower than it would on another surface.

Painting Wood Floors

Before you begin your project of painting a wood floor you need to determine the existing finish on the floor before you paint. If your floor is unfinished then you can simply prepare and paint. If your floor has some type of finish, such as polyurethane or any other type of ceiling finish such as teak oil or linseed oil you may have to have the floor completely stripped before you paint. Again, anything between the floor and the paint has to be removed. Failure to do so and the paint will not be absorbed nor will it binds to the wood.

Prepping your wood floor for paint properly will make or break the job. Strip and sand the wood floors and then clean the dust and grit thoroughly. You may want to use a tack cloth to make sure to pick up all the dust and dirt. Oil paints tend to work better for painting wood floors as they are more durable. If your wood floor is a high traffic area you will want to apply three close of clear polyurethane over the painted finish.

To get a really smooth finish when painting wood floors lightly sand between coats of paint and remove the dust and grime with a tack cloth. However, never sand the final top coat and you will have a glass smooth finish.

Ray Winstone Set for BBC's 'Great Expectations'

Fotos International/Getty Images

LONDON - Ray Winstone?will return to British screens in Great Expecations, a new BBC/Masterpiece adaptation of the Dickens classic due to air as a three-part drama on BBC1 over Christmas.

Winstone will play Magwitch, the escaped convict who turns benefactor to a young boy, Pip.

HIs youthful co-star will be played by rising star Douglas Booth, who attracted plaudits for his recent performances in Worried About the Boy and Christopher And His Kind.

Producers have been in talks with X-Files star Gillian Anderson about taking the role of Miss Haversham, with the aim of giving the ?gothic jilted bride a far more youthful and charismatic presence than has ever been seen on screen. However, Anderson - who recently played embittered brothel owner and prostitute Mrs Castaway in another BBC period drama The Scarlet Petal and the Black -?has not yet been announced as part of the cast.

The new Dickens reworking comes from writer Sarah Phelps, who pitches the classic drama as "part thriller, part mystery, with a powerful love story at its heart."

Phelps said the epic themes of obsession, corruption, redemption and revenge would bring a new generation of viewers to the classic tale. Filming will begin in July.

"I'm thrilled to be playing Magwiitch. I've wanted to play him for ages," said Winstone, who said the Dickens classic was his favorite novel.

"I'm really excited about Sarah Phelps' new take on the story and I can't wait to get stuck in."
