FILE - In this undated photo released by supporters of Chen Guangcheng, blind activist Chen Guangcheng, center, is seen in a village in China. Guangcheng says a U.S. official told him that Chinese authorities threatened to beat his wife to death had be not left the American Embassy. Speaking by phone from his hospital room in Beijing on Wednesday, May 2, 2012, a shaken Chen told The Associated Press that U.S. officials relayed the threat from the Chinese side. Chen, who fled to the embassy six day ago, left under an agreement in which he would receive medical care, be reunited with his family and allowed to attend university in a safe place. He says he now fears for his safety and wants to leave. (AP Photo/Supporters of Chen Guangcheng, HO)

(AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said Thursday the Obama administration had "failed" to protect a blind Chinese dissident by factoring political considerations into the negotiations that ultimately led him to leave the U.S. Embassy in Beijing. The White House said the president wasn't concerned about the politics of the case.

Campaigning in Virginia, Romney said if reports that the U.S. communicated implicit threats to Chen Guangcheng as he was deciding whether to leave the embassy are true, that represents a "dark day for freedom."

Chen took refuge at the embassy after escaping house arrest. He rejected a deal to keep him safely in China and now says he wants to leave the country. Chen has said he feels abandoned by the U.S. American officials have said they didn't pressure him to leave.

"If these reports are true, this is a dark day for freedom and it's a day of shame for the Obama administration," Romney said. "We are a place of freedom, here and around the world, and we should stand up and defend freedom wherever it is under attack."

The State Department said this week it conveyed no implicit threats and the issue of violence never came up in its discussions with Chen. They told him that China had agreed for him to reunite with his family if he left the U.S. Embassy.

Romney suggested U.S. officials were motivated by the politics of Chen's case. He said U.S. officials "willingly or unwittingly communicated to Chen an implicit threat to his family" and accelerated negotiations for his safety because of scheduled high-level talks in the country with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and their Chinese counterparts.

Romney also said the embassy had "failed to put in place the kind of verifiable measures that would assure the safety" of Chen and his family.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said President Barack Obama "is not concerned about political back-and-forth on this issue." Obama has an eye on the larger U.S.-China relationship and will continue to press Beijing on human rights, he said.

"He is focused on the need to advance U.S. interests in our broad-based relationship with China ? very important economic, diplomatic relationship with China," Carney said. "He has and will continue to make a priority in that relationship or a part of that relationship an open and frank discussion of our concerns about human rights."

Carney refused to elaborate on Obama's thinking on the issue.

The State Department had no comment Thursday on Romney's criticism of Chen's case.

Still, the issue hovered over Thursday's opening of two-days of talks on global political and economic hotspots led by Clinton and Geithner.

A self-taught lawyer, Chen, 40, spent most of the last seven years in prison or under house arrest in what was seen as retribution by local Chinese authorities for his activism against forced abortions and other official misdeeds. His wife, daughter and mother were confined at home with him, enduring beatings, searches and other mistreatment.

His escape from house arrest to the fortress-like U.S. Embassy last week put Washington at the center of a sensitive human rights case.

Chen's goal, he told U.S. officials, was to secure the safety of his family and remain in China. Under painstaking arrangements negotiated over days, he was to be reunited with his family and relocated elsewhere in China so he could formally study law.

Chen later said he felt abandoned at the hospital when he realized no U.S. Embassy staff had stayed to ensure his safety.

U.S. Ambassador to China Gary Locke defended the arrangements Thursday and said "unequivocally" that Chen was never pressured to leave.

The diplomatic dispute over Chen is sensitive for the Obama administration, which risks appearing soft on human rights in an election year or looking as though it rushed to resolve Chen's case before the start of the Clinton-Geithner talks.

Clinton said in a speech that China must protect human rights. She rejected Beijing's criticism of the U.S. for getting involved in Chen's case.

Low oxygen levels could drive cancer growth

Friday, May 4, 2012

Low oxygen levels in cells may be a primary cause of uncontrollable tumor growth in some cancers, according to a new University of Georgia study. The authors' findings run counter to widely accepted beliefs that genetic mutations are responsible for cancer growth.

If hypoxia, or low oxygen levels in cells, is proven to be a key driver of certain types of cancer, treatment plans for curing the malignant growth could change in significant ways, said Ying Xu, Regents-Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar and professor of bioinformatics and computational biology in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences.

The research team analyzed samples of messenger RNA data?also called transcriptomic data?from seven different cancer types in a publicly available database. They found that long-term lack of oxygen in cells may be a key driver of cancer growth. The study was published in the early online edition of the Journal of Molecular Cell Biology.

Previous studies have linked low oxygen levels in cells as a contributing factor in cancer development, but not as the driving force for cancer growth. High incidence rates of cancer around the world cannot be explained by chance genetic mutations alone, Xu said. He added that bioinformatics, which melds biology and computational science, has allowed researchers to see cancer in a new light. Gene-level mutations may give cancer cells a competitive edge over healthy cells, but the proposed new cancer growth model does not require the presence of common malfunctions such as a sudden proliferation of oncogenes, precursors to cancer cells.

"Cancer drugs try to get to the root?at the molecular level?of a particular mutation, but the cancer often bypasses it," Xu said. "So we think that possibly genetic mutations may not be the main driver of cancer."

Much of cancer research so far has focused on designing drug treatments that counteract genetic mutations associated with a particular type of cancer. In their study, the researchers analyzed data downloaded from the Stanford Microarray Database via a software program to detect abnormal gene expression patterns in seven cancers: breast, kidney, liver, lung, ovary, pancreatic and stomach. The online database allows scientists to examine information from microarray chips, which are small glass slides containing large amounts of gene material.

Xu relied on the gene HIF1A as a biomarker of the amount of molecular oxygen in a cell. All seven cancers showed increasing amounts of HIF1A, indicating decreasing oxygen levels in the cancer cells.

Low oxygen levels in a cell interrupt the activity of oxidative phosphorylation, a term for the highly efficient way that cells normally use to convert food to energy. As oxygen decreases, the cells switch to glycolysis to produce their energy units, called ATP. Glycolysis is a drastically less efficient way to obtain energy, and so the cancer cells must work even harder to obtain even more food, specifically glucose, to survive. When oxygen levels dip dangerously low, angiogenesis, or the process of creating new blood vessels, begins. The new blood vessels provide fresh oxygen, thus improving oxygen levels in the cell and tumor and slowing the cancer growth?but only temporarily.

"When a cancer cell gets more food, it grows; this makes the tumor biomass bigger and even more hypoxic. In turn, the energy-conversion efficiency goes further down, making the cells even more hungry and triggering the cells to get more food from blood circulation, creating a vicious cycle. This could be a key driver of cancer," Xu said.

Xu explained that this new cancer-growth model could help explain why many cancers become drug resistant so quickly?often within three to six months. He stressed the importance of testing the new model through future experimental cancer research. If the model holds, researchers will need to search for methods to prevent hypoxia in cells in the first place, which could result in a sea change in cancer treatment.

Myth of Motivation | The Simple Self-Improvement Blog

Reprinted from: Active Vegetarian?

One of the things we hear most is that people don?t feel motivated. Understandable ?I feel that way quite often. A huge myth is that people who are the most fit, healthy and strong are also the most motivated.

WRONG!

Often they are the most dedicated and disciplined, but that?s a separate thing from motivation. Let me explain?

? People think that they need to be motivated in order to achieve a certain task. For example ?in order to have a great workout you need to feel motivated and inspired.

I will never be inspired and motivated to run high incline treadmill sprints. Never? Ever ?Period.

It?s no fun and it hurts. However?

I AM motivated by the results I get from treadmill hill sprinting. It gets me lean and conditioned.

THAT?is motivating.

This is where most people get it?BASS-ACKWARDS ?.

The motivation comes from the results. Very rarely before it.

So here?s the catch:?In order to get the results ?that will further motivate you ?you have to find a way to do action necessary to begin the cycle.

Here?s my advice?

?..Stop wasting time trying to motivate yourself into action. Just take action. Any action. Imperfect action.?BUT TAKE ACTION.

That is the most motivating thing in the world. From the action you will see results ?.thus spinning a Perpetual Cycle of Awesomeness (TM).?:-)

As are most truths in life?this one is rather paradoxical.?Motivation Comes After Action ? Not Before It!

So here?s what to do:

Whatever area in your life you aren?t feeling motivated ? take immediate action.?TODAY!!!!

It?s not action if you say you?ll do it later.

Action is now!?Commit to yourself right now that you will take action within the next 24 hours.?However small it is, as long as it?s action it?s a step in the right direction.

Let me tell you a story from my own personal life.?Disclaimer: All people and events in the following story have likely been exaggerated to make me look much cooler than I really am!

Earlier this week I had a scheduled strength workout. I really didn?t feel like it. So I made myself a deal ?.

?.I told myself that I would go to the gym and do the first exercise in my scheduled workout. That?s it, just the first exercise.

After I bench pressed 1700 pound (possible exaggeration) I made another deal with myself. I would do the next exercise and ?see how I feel?.

It went well and I finished the rest of my workout. It wasn?t the greatest workout I ever had ?but it was a hell of a lot better than nothing.

I went into the gym feeling miserable -and left feeling awesome! That motivation helped me eat better the rest of the day, and turned a mediocre day into a great day.

That feeling came?AFTER?the workout. (Before the workout I was like a bear with a sore?.)

Bottom Line:?When we take action we feel great! It gives us a sense of pride and accomplishment. That re-frames our thinking and perceptions about ourselves and we begin to see ourselves in a more positive light.

Once this happens we take bigger action on a more regular basis and results come greater and more frequently.

So here?s the question of the day:?What action are you going to take within the next 24 hours?

I?d love to hear about it?:-)

Talk soon,

Joe

First solar-powered boat to circle the world pulls into home port, contemplates next move

It's been two years since we last heard of the 98-foot-long solar-powered boat, which at the time was gearing up for its big journey around the world. Well, some 19 months and 37,286 miles after setting sail from Monaco, the MS Turanor PlanetSolar has finally made it home. The PlanetSolar broke four Guinness world records along the way, including the all-important "first circumnavigation by solar-powered boat," and it made stops on six continents to promote solar energy. Oh, and the team fended off Somalian pirates in the process, too. Now that it has a moment to catch its breath and soak up some rays at leisure, the MS Turanor could become any number of things -- from the world's largest solar battery to a "green luxury yacht." The latter option would certainly befit its chichi home port.
