Cancer-beater ref Mark Halsey given all-clear to whistle on next ...

Cancer-beating referee Mark Halsey has been given the all-clear to whistle on past 50 next season.

Halsey overcame life-threatening lymphoma to make an inspiring return to the middle within eight months of being diagnosed in August, 2009.

Now the Bolton-based ref ? who turns 50 on July 8 ? has been engaged for another season by the Professional Game Match Officials board.

Halsey was the least card-happy ref in the select group last season. In 34 games, he showed one red and 68 yellows ? the lowest return of any top-level whistler.

A senior refereeing figure said: ?That is testimony to Mark?s management skills and the respect he has earned from players.?

Halsey?s offer to continue beyond the old retirement age of 50 is conditional on passing the usual fitness tests.

All 16 members of the elite group have been retained ? including the oldest, Peter Walton, who is 52 in October.
