Mark/Space Welcome Home eases us into new Nokia Lumias, lifts the burden of app hunting

Nokia, MarkSpace ease us into new Lumias with Welcome Home

So you just bought a Nokia Lumia 900 and are wondering how on Earth you'll get all your old phone's data over to that new Windows Phone. Nokia and Mark/Space have you covered with a new, Lumia-tuned Welcome Home to Windows Phone app. The Mac- and Windows-based utility goes beyond just shuffling calendars, contacts and media; if you're jumping ship from Android, a BlackBerry or an iPhone, it will scan apps linked to the outgoing hardware and offer QR codes to download either direct or close-enough equivalents for the Windows Phone world. Fresh Lumia owners might appreciate the price more than anything -- unlike the Android porting tool, the Lumia version is a free treat just for joining the Nokia flock. It's available today, but we have a feeling that most of the demand will come after September 5th.

DoD may take legal action against SEAL author - Marine Corps Times

http://www.marinecorpstimes.com/news/2012/08/ap-pentagon-may-take-legal-action-against-seal-author-083012/

By Robert Burns - The Associated Press
Posted : Thursday Aug 30, 2012 20:55:14 EDT

WASHINGTON ? The Pentagon is considering legal action against a former Navy SEAL whose book describes insider details of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, but it has not made a final judgment on whether it actually reveals secrets, a spokesman said Friday.

Pentagon press secretary George Little said the author, Matt Bissonnette, was deemed to be in violation of two nondisclosure agreements that he signed in 2007 by failing to submit the book for an official security review before it was published.

Little would not say what legal options the Pentagon is considering or when it might take action.

?I write to formally advise you of your material breach and violation of your agreements, and to inform you that the department is considering pursuing against you, and all those acting in concert with you, all remedies legally available to us in light of this situation,? Johnson wrote.

Little suggested that if Bissonnette were to stop the book?s official release, scheduled for next week, that might be a remedy. Some advance copies have been circulating, and the Pentagon obtained one last week. It has since been reviewing it for any classified information and to determine what, if any, legal action should be taken, Little said.

?The onus is on the author,? Little said, while declining to spell out what the author must do.

Little declined to describe the Pentagon?s assessment of the contents of the book, but he later said it had not reached ?any final conclusions? about whether secrets were revealed.

The Pentagon?s position was presented Thursday by its top lawyer, Jeh Johnson, in a letter transmitted to the author through his New York publisher, Penguin Group (USA)?s Dutton imprint.

Johnson said Bissonnette?s nondisclosure agreements obliged him to ?never divulge? classified information.

?This commitment remains in force even after you left the active duty Navy,? Johnson wrote. He said the author left active duty ?on or about April 20, 2012,? which was nearly one year after the May 2011 raid.

By signing the agreements, Bissonnette acknowledged his awareness, Johnson wrote, that ?disclosure of classified information constitutes a violation of federal criminal law.? He said it also obliged the author to submit his manuscript for a security review by the government before it was published. The Pentagon has said the manuscript was not submitted for review, although it obtained a copy last week. The Associated Press purchased one on Tuesday.

The Pentagon has not revealed how it got its copy.

In his letter to Bissonnette, Johnson noted that ?copies of the book have apparently already been released.? He added, ?further public dissemination of your book will aggravate your breach and violation of your agreements.?

Johnson said that after reviewing a copy of the book, ?No Easy Day,? the Pentagon concluded that the author is in ?material breach and violation? of the agreements, but did not say explicitly that the book reveals secrets.

Rep. Peter King, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, said in a statement Friday that all who are entrusted with classified information are obliged to protect it.

?Whether it is administration officials or special forces operators, national security leaks are wrong and should be prosecuted to the fullest extent possible,? King said.

A special operations advocacy group, Special Operations-OPSEC, which has criticized President Obama for alleged White House leaks and for making the bin Laden raid a national security centerpiece of his re-election campaign, said the author should be held to the same standard as others in protecting secrets.

?However, the Obama administration is applying a dishonorable double standard with a lightning quick threat to prosecute a five-time winner of the Bronze Star while dragging its feet in identifying and charging senior administration officials who have purposefully leaked classified information,? the president of the group, Scott Taylor, said Friday.

Johnson addressed his letter to Mr. ?Mark Owen,? using quotation marks to signify that that this is the author?s pseudonym.

Bissonnette referred requests for comment about the letter to his publisher, which was not immediately available.

The Pentagon did not release copies of the nondisclosure agreements that it said Bissonnette had signed in 2007. A spokesman, Army Lt. Col. Steve Warren, said they were being withheld because they include the author?s real name and his signature.

In his book, Bissonnette wrote that the SEALs spotted bin Laden at the top of a darkened hallway and shot him in the head even though they could not tell whether he was armed. Administration officials have described the SEALs shooting bin Laden only after he ducked back into a bedroom because they assumed he might be reaching for a weapon.

AP writers Kimberly Dozier and Adam Goldman contributed to this report.

"Great Expectations" rounds off London film festival

LONDON (Reuters) - An all-star film adaptation of Dickens' classic novel "Great Expectations" will round off the London film festival this year, marking the 200th anniversary of the author's birth, organizers said on Thursday.

Starring Ralph Fiennes as Magwitch and Helena Bonham Carter as Miss Havisham, the film will see Jeremy Irvine play Pip, an orphan who is catapulted out of poverty and transformed into a gentleman by a mysterious benefactor.

Directed by Mike Newell and scripted by "One Day" author David Nicholls, the film will make its European premiere at the festival on October 21, before hitting British theatres on November 30.

Both Fiennes and Bonham Carter, whose partner Tim Burton will kick off the festival with his animated film "Frankenweenie", are expected to attend.

"I'm proud that our new version of Great Expectations should be presented this year, the bi-centenary of Dickens' birth," said Newell, who directed "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire".

"I've tried to make a film that is true to the theatrical vividness, energetic characters and high color that he is loved for, while mining the deep seams of emotional cruelty and madness that underlie one of Dickens' darkest-shadowed stories," Newell said.

This year's British Film Institute (BFI) London film festival runs from October 10-21, and the full lineup will be announced on September 5.

Sustainable construction: Waste wanted | Eco-Business.com

The Supertrees at Singapore's Gardens by the Bay are made with Holcim high strength green concrete for a reduced carbon footprint. Image: Eco-Business.

The construction industry is scrambling to find sustainable building materials for Asia?s booming cities, and companies are now competing for industrial waste to replace some of the natural resources they consume, say experts.

In Singapore, the lack of natural resources and growing demand for green buildings are driving the hunt for alternative building materials, and several concrete manufacturers have turned to a limited supply of recycled materials and industrial by-products.

One manufacturer that has done so is Holcim Singapore, a subsidiary of the Swiss-headquartered Holcim Group.

?We look for win-win solutions that offer immediate value and provide a commercial advantage,? said managing director Sujit Ghosh in an interview at the firm?s recently opened Centre of Excellence.

Holcim established the new centre with support from Singapore?s Economic Development Board. Its aim is to take products at the research and development stage and turn them into commercial products saleable in Asian market.

/>/>/>/> />

Holcim is no stranger to using recycled materials in its products. In 2007, prompted by the sand crisis (see sidebar), Holcim started using waste collected from Singapore?s shipping industry in the making of its concrete. But first, it had to convince the regulator, Building and Construction Authority (BCA), that such material was safe enough to be allowed in building codes, noted Dr Ghosh.

The new concrete, called Holcim Green, was made from recycled granite from old buildings. Part of the sand needed in the process was also replaced with processed copper slag used by shipyards to clean ships.

Holcim obtained its copper slag by setting up a joint venture with local waste processing firm ecoWise in 2008, but the 400,000 tonnes that Singapore?s shipyards discard annually is only enough for about one month of the manufacturer?s concrete production.

The company produces about 1.5 million cubic metres of concrete each year, of which 5 to 10 per cent is certified green concrete.

Now that copper slag and other alternative materials - such as debris from building demolitions ? have been approved by building regulators, competition for those resources is increasing, said Dr Ghosh.

The firm is currently finalizing plans to use waste materials from Singapore?s waste incinerators, known as incinerator bottom ash.

This waste, of up to half a million tonnes each year, would otherwise end up in the Republic?s only landfill. Semakau Landfill is located off-shore and is currently under expansion so that it can continue to receive waste through at least 2045.

Home-grown Samwoh Group, which specializes in road building and also makes certified green ready-mixed concrete, is another manufacturer recycling waste back into building supplies.

The firm has two plants in Singapore that recycle asphalt and concrete from construction projects.? In 2010, it also built the Samwoh Eco-Green Building following a joint study with BCA and Singapore?s Nanyang Technological University to prove the safety of buildings using high percentages of recycled content. The building was the first in the region to use 100 per cent recycled ingredients for the concrete aggregate, which is the material added to cement and water to make the final product.

A shortage of waste

Holcim?s Dr Ghosh said that if there was an unlimited supply of recycled materials and by-products, the industry could easily replace half of the virgin materials it consumes without affecting the quality of the concrete. However, the available supply of copper slag, construction debris and incinerator bottom ash combined provides only a fraction ? about 10 per cent ? ?of the material Singapore?s building industry needs for concrete, he noted.

?Asia is not going to decrease its insatiable demand to build, so we need to figure out how we can do more with less,? said Dr Ghosh.

To reduce the demand for concrete from the construction industry, Holcim developed an eco-friendly high strength concrete that can decrease the amount of material needed for building projects by up to 50 per cent.

Two years ago, Holcim again worked with BCA to amend building codes that allow the use of high strength concrete, which was already used in Europe and Japan.

Since then, the firm has seen increased interest from builders that want to lower their carbon footprint and increase available floor area by using less bulky concrete structures, noted Dr Ghosh.

He predicted that over the next five years, the company?s high strength concrete could grow to 20 to 30 per cent of its overall production now that BCA is encouraging the use of such materials to reduce the carbon footprint of buildings.

While green concrete and green building designs are important to reducing the building industry?s environmental impacts, they are only part of the solution, he said.

The industry has done a good job focusing on design and energy efficiency, but has only just begun to map out the overall environmental impacts of the construction process, he explained.

He has seen some progress, including growing emphasis on productivity and sustainable materials, and better sorting of demolition debris. Three years ago, contractors sent stones from demolition sites to the landfill with the rest of the debris, but now they are all reused, he noted.

However, Dr Ghosh said building developers will need a bigger push, possibly in the form of a carbon price, to fully address the impacts of a project from start to finish.

Jury in Apple case: You can patent cool

Ahn Young-Joon / AP

Samsung's Galaxy S III, right, and Apple's iPhone 4S are displayed at a mobile phone shop in Seoul, South Korea, Friday. After a year of scorched-earth litigation, a U.S. jury decided Friday that Samsung ripped off the innovative technology used by Apple to create its revolutionary iPhone and iPad.

By Martha C. White

Yes, you can patent the cool factor. That was the message of the nine-member jury that took just three days to reach a verdict in the?landmark Apple-Samsung patent infringement battle.

After a three-week trial, the jury concluded Friday that Samsung had willfully violated Apple patents, copying the look and feel of the massively popular iPhone and iPad in its own smartphone and Tablet devices. Samsung came up empty in its cross-claims against Apple and was ordered to pay $1.05 billion in damages.

Although Samsung suggested it would appeal, saying the jury ruling was "not the final word in this case," Samsung devices could be pulled from the U.S. market soon as Apple said it will seek an injunction at a Sept. 20 hearing. The decision was a blow to Google, whose Android operating system powers Samsung's devices, which generally sell at a discount to comparable Apple products.

Apple's late CEO Steve Jobs had threatened to go "thermonuclear" on Google over its perceived theft of Apple's intellectual property, according to Job's biographer, and new CEO Tim Cook has continued to aggressively press the legal battle around the world.

The federal court jury agreed with Apple's claims that not only was it able to protect the distinctive design of its products but also technology such as the ability of users to "pinch-and-zoom" to manipulate images using two or more fingers on device touchscreens.

Intellectual property experts said the decision will push?push smartphone and tablet manufacturers to come up with new ideas ? and patent them all.

"Every single technology company in the world will be filing every single design patent known to man,"?said?Kevin G. Rivette, managing partner at 3LP Advisors.

Related: Jury sides with Apple, orders Samsung to pay $1 billion

While the decision will almost certainly be appealed, it also sets a precedent. It is a shot across the bow that other device manufacturers can?t afford to ignore.

Apple had a less favorable outcome in Samsung's home country of South Korea, where a three-judge panel ruled earlier Friday that both companies had infringed on each other and halted sales of products made by Apple as well as Samsung.

Apple was widely favored to come out on top in the case decided today, partly because the court?s Silicon Valley location is friendly territory for the Cupertino-based company, and also because of the disparity between the way the two sides presented their arguments.

As the plaintiff, it was in Apple?s best interest to make its message easy to digest. For a company that built its brand on making technology simple and pleasant to interact with, this was a natural. Samsung had the burden of wading into more complex territory and hoping jurors would follow along.

That Apple carried the day indicates that its streamlined message resonated more strongly, because patent experts say that design patent infringement, for which Apple was seeking the largest damages, is hard to prove. These patents focus on form over function: how something looks as opposed to what it does.

Apple took the bold and risky tack of arguing that the way its devices look and feel is an integral part of how people use them. Other smartphone and tablet makers now have to find ways to create devices that don?t resemble the iPhone ? no easy feat, given that Apple more or less created the idea in people?s minds of what a smartphone should look like when it debuted the iPhone five years ago.

"It will force innovation," Rivette said, a circumstance that might cause some heartburn for smartphone and tablet manufacturers but will ultimately benefit consumers.?

CNBC's Jon Fortt reports from outside the courtroom following the jury's verdict. Apple was awarded more than $1 billion and had many of its patents upheld.

Aside from Apple, the jury's decision creates a few other unlikely winners, including Microsoft, for one. Analysts have said for months that Microsoft must convince consumers that Windows 8 offers a relevant alternative to iOS and Android. The sudden interest in devices that don?t behave like iPhones and iPads coincides almost perfectly with the platform?s debut.

Rivette said the verdict will invigorate technology patent wars, which means companies like Google ? which has been in Apple?s crosshairs before and almost certainly will be again ? will be scrambling for ammunition. Former tech heavyweights Research in Motion and Eastman Kodak both have vast patent portfolios that suddenly look like a good investment in light of the $1 billion award for damages.

Paralympic cauldron lit in central London

LONDON (AP) ? Partially paralyzed marathon participant Claire Lomas lit the Paralympic cauldron in central London on Friday, one of a slew of events meant to mark the coming of the Paralympic Games across the British capital.

Prime Minister David Cameron addressed the crowd gathered at London's Trafalgar Square just before the cauldron was ignited, saying that the Olympic Games had made his country proud, but that "these Paralympic Games will make our country prouder still."

"We are going to show the whole world that when it comes to putting on a show, there is no country like Britain and no city like London," he said.

The Paralympics ? a competition for disabled athletes ? have traditionally garnered far less attention than the Olympic Games, which attract hundreds of millions of spectators and sports enthusiasts from across the globe. Still the event's profile is rising, and organizers say that more than 2.3 million of 2.5 million tickets for the games have already been sold.

Three other Paralympic flames have been struck at other locations in Britain and Northern Ireland, and are due to be united next Tuesday at the southern England village of Stoke Mandeville before being carried 92 miles (150 kilometers) by 580 torchbearers to the Olympic Stadium in east London, where it will be used to light the cauldron at the opening ceremony of the games on the evening of August 29.

Lomas, who uses a bionic suit to move around after being paralyzed from the chest down following a horse-riding accident in 2007, said the experience of lighting the cauldron was "actually quite nerve-wracking."

Earlier this year, Lomas made headlines when she completed the London marathon route over several days, a bid that raised some 200,000 pounds ($315,000) for a spinal research organization. She smiled broadly and shook her walking poles as she lit the flame.

"I was shaking before I went on but it went smoothly," she said later.

Meanwhile, at London's neo-gothic Tower Bridge, the Paralympic symbol, the Agitos, was moved in to replace the Olympic rings hanging high above the River Thames. The three circling arcs represent Spirit in Motion ? the Paralympics motto ? and the red, blue and green color scheme which incorporate colors from flags from across the world.

Santa Fe College student dies from gunshot wound

Published: Friday, August 24, 2012 at 11:08 a.m.
Last Modified: Friday, August 24, 2012 at 11:08 a.m.

The man fatally shot outside a southwest Gainesville apartment Thursday night has been identified as a Santa Fe College student who police believe went to the apartment as part of a drug deal.

Eugene Shelton, 26, was killed, Gainesville police detective Cpl. Bennie Smith said.

?We think he was going to meet someone reference a drug transaction. We don't know what happened after that. It could have been robbery, it could have been anything,? Smith said. ?For some reason he was meeting with someone and was shot.?

No arrests have been made.

Shelton was shot in the chest and underwent surgery at Shands at the University of Florida before dying.

Police first got a call about a gunshot about 8:26 p.m. at Rocky Point apartments at 3100 SW 35th Place. A woman told police she heard a gunshot, looked out her window, saw a man in a white T-shirt running toward a wooded area and saw another man get into a car and drive off, police spokeswoman Angelina Valuri said Thursday night.

While police were at the apartment, Shands notified GPD that a man with a gunshot wound had been brought to the hospital, Valuri said.

The shooting appears to have occurred in the parking lot outside an apartment.

Smith said police have spoken to the man who drove Shelton to the hospital but would not discuss what was learned from the interview.

Police canvassed the neighborhood last night and again on Friday to try to learn if anyone witnessed the incident or has any information about the shooter.

Accused Colorado gunman made threats before shooting: prosecutor

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (Reuters) - Accused Colorado gunman James Holmes made threats as his academic career deteriorated and he accumulated an arsenal before a shooting rampage that killed 12 people at a suburban Denver movie theater last month, a prosecutor said on Thursday.

Holmes was "making threats and those threats were reported to police," prosecutor Karen Pearson said during a hearing on whether prosecutors can have access to his university records. Pearson did not elaborate on the nature of the threats.

Holmes, a former neuroscience graduate student, is accused of opening fire on July 20 at a midnight screening of the new Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora, Colorado, killing 12 and wounding 58.

Pearson portrayed Holmes, 24, as a young man whose record at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus was in tatters, saying he had failed oral board exams in early June and one of his professors had suggested he may not have been a good fit for the competitive Ph.D. program.

Subsequently, Holmes started making threats that were reported to police and he was barred from University of Colorado facilities before the shooting, she said.

University spokeswoman Jacque Montgomery said Holmes was not banned from the campus but that withdrawing students typically have their access badges deactivated, effectively denying them access to facilities such as laboratories.

"The prosecution was very aggressive today. They are obviously building a case based on revenge," said Craig Silverman, a former Denver prosecutor now in private practice who has been following the case.

"Motive is not required but jurors will want to look for a reason why this guy did it, which will go against an insanity defense."

The issue of a possible motive surfaced as Pearson argued that the school records, which could include transcripts and class schedules but not medical records, are key to understanding Holmes' state of mind leading up to the rampage.

"All of this is relevant to his decision to withdraw from school, booby-trap his apartment and buy ammunition," she said.

FISHING EXPEDITION

Holmes' attorney Daniel King said during a previous court hearing that his client suffers from an unspecified mental illness and had tried to get help. Local media have reported he saw at least three mental health professionals before the shooting.

Holmes - charged with 24 counts of first degree murder and 116 counts of attempted murder - appeared in court for the hearing clad in a red jumpsuit with his dyed red hair fading to orange and pink. He seemed alert but calm and had the beginnings of a beard.

King said he opposed giving prosecutors access to Holmes' university records, arguing in Arapahoe District Court that the request was "massively overbroad."

"They are fishing around to establish a motive. ... The motive is irrelevant," he said. "Nothing in those documents will reveal any intent."

Judge William Sylvester did not immediately rule on the dispute.

Court papers filed by defense attorneys in July said Holmes had been a patient of the medical director for student mental health services on campus, Dr. Lynne Fenton, before he filed paperwork to drop out of the neuroscience graduate program.

As in many states, mental healthcare providers in Colorado must warn authorities of potential violent behavior only when a patient has communicated a serious threat of imminent physical violence against a specific target.

Previous media reports have said Fenton reported her concerns about Holmes to a campus threat assessment team and a campus police officer.

Holmes, who authorities said referred to himself as the "Joker" in reference to Batman's comic-book nemesis after his arrest, is being held without bond in solitary confinement at the Arapahoe County jail. Prosecutors have not yet decided whether they will seek the death penalty.

Pujara, Dhoni put India in command over NZealand

Cheteshwar Pujara and Mahendra Singh Dhoni strengthened India's dominant position against New Zealand on Friday in the opening Test in Hyderabad.

Pujara (151 not out) and skipper Dhoni (61 not out) have so far added 111 for the unfinished sixth-wicket stand to help their team reach 371-5 in their first innings at lunch on the second day.

India added 64 runs to their overnight total of 307-5 after a delayed start due to bad weather.

Dhoni, who was 29 not out on Thursday, completed his half-century when he turned paceman Doug Bracewell to mid-wicket for three runs. He has so far hit one six and five fours in his 25th Test half-century.

Pujara, 119 overnight, continued to gather runs comfortably against the New Zealand attack, having so far cracked one six and 18 fours in his 282-ball knock.

The 24-year-old, who replaced retired Rahul Dravid at number three, played some handsome shots as he hit two fours in an over from left-arm paceman Trent Boult and then pulled Bracewell for a boundary to reach 150.

Exotic Pet Dangers In East Elmhurst

Does your child have an unusual pet? Many East Elmhurst parents have bypassed cats and dogs for pets that don?t leave hair, urine, or vomit on the carpet. Ease of care, however, is not always a wise trade-off. East Elmhurst parents should be aware of the multiple health and safety risks associated with reptiles, rodents, ferrets, primates, and even fish.

The following list of pets and the possible dangers reads like a script for a horror movie:

Fish: infections that can cause lung disease, skin infections, and leprosy
Hamsters: a virus that causes irreversible nerve damage
Hedgehogs: salmonella, yersinia pseudotuberculosis, rabies, and fungal infections
Iguanas, lizards, snakes: salmonella (the animals themselves can tolerate levels of salmonella far greater than humans)
Monkeys and other primates: herpes B (can cause meningitis in humans), tuberculosis, serious injury
Ferrets: these fierce critters with razor-sharp teeth have maimed many children
Prairie dogs: tuleremia (often fatal infection)
African Gambian rats: monkeypox (smallpox-related disease)

The foregoing information was taken from an excellent U.S. News article which can be found at http://health.usnews.com/health-news/blogs/on-parenting/2008/10/06/8-pets-that-pose-major-health-threats-to-kids

With proper hygiene and safety precautions these pets may not cause problems, but it is important to understand the possible dangers. Consult an expert for comprehensive instructions on caring for any traditional or non-traditional pet.

Pakistan summons US diplomat to protest drones

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? Pakistan's Foreign Ministry has summoned a senior U.S. diplomat to protest recent drone strikes targeting militants in the country's northwest tribal region near the Afghan border.

Pakistani officials told the diplomat, who was not identified, that the attacks were unacceptable, unlawful and a violation of Pakistan's sovereignty.

Islamabad's protest Thursday follows a string of three drone attacks in three days earlier this week in the North Waziristan tribal area, a major militant sanctuary.

The strikes are very unpopular in Pakistan because many people believe they mostly kill civilians ? an allegation disputed by the U.S.

Despite Pakistan's protests, the government is widely believed to have supported the attacks in the past. That cooperation has come under pressure as the relationship between the two countries has deteriorated.

AVG (AU/NZ) reveals what men really search for online : Asia Pacific ...

By APSM on Aug 22, 2012 in Cyber Resilience

?

Media Release: MELBOURNE, 21 August 2012 ? How is it that today?s ?mal-aware? users are still falling for spam emails offering cheap Viagra, beautiful girls looking for love, or inappropriate photos of celebrities?

AVG (AU/NZ) Pty Ltd reminds Internet users that the weakest point in Internet security is often the behaviour of online users themselves, enabling socially engineered malware to be more successful.
A survey by the Australian Bureau of Statistics* covering 2010-11 suggests Australians are far from learning about online scams and ID theft attempts and may in fact be becoming more gullible. Some 6.4 million ? or just over a third of the population ? were exposed to a scam of some kind in the 12 months before the survey interview. Only 514,500 responded to a scam, but ? and surprisingly given the increased publicity on scam attempts ? this is an increase from the 329,000 victims who responded to some sort of scam in 2007.
Much of today?s malware is aimed at those who readily open suspicious links. In particular, the subject matter often seems to target men, providing free games, free music, free movies, Get Rich Quick schemes, and inappropriate content in emails such as porn and revealing photos of celebrities.

?

According to the AVG Q2 2012 Community Powered Threat Report*, in the last quarter Android smartphone users were tricked into downloading malware which was hidden in seemingly legitimate applications such as ?Angry Birds Space?. This then allowed the hacker to make money from the infected device as they wish, and to download additional malicious code or connect the device to a botnet.

As AVG?s Threat Labs face the minute-by-minute launch of new online threats, Michael McKinnon, Security Advisor at AVG (AU/NZ) answers the top five cybercrime questions:

Although Internet security awareness is high, are there real dangers of which consumers are unaware or underestimate?

Since most Internet users use spam filters, the majority of virus-ridden emails now end up in the ?Junk? folder. However, it is surprising how often people still click on the links or attachments in emails for ?Buy Cheap Viagra? or ?You want to make $100,000 fast??. Once the user clicks on the link, they are transferred to an infected website that begins the malware download.

Spam is also being rapidly spread by other means such as social networks. Cybercriminals are becoming increasingly adept at collecting facts from a victim?s or group of victims? real environment: friends? surnames, online interests, searched companies. Then they send what looks like safe online correspondence with links, which are tempting to click on. ?You really need to keep up your guard at all times,? McKinnon said.

Are Apple users better protected than PC owners?

It?s not that Apple?s security technologies are any better than others, it?s that hackers follow volume to money. In our experience, a platform only needs to have 10 percent market share to become sufficiently worthwhile to malware authors, so it?s no surprise that Android is attractive ? ?and with the number of Mac users rising, cybercriminals will now think it?s worth the effort to develop malware for that environment.

How many users fall victim to cybercrime?

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics? Personal Fraud Survey, around 1.2 million Australians fell victim to at least one incident of personal fraud (defined as credit card fraud, identity theft, and scams) in 2010-11, losing $1.4 billion over the year.

McKinnon believes: ?Almost every computer user has fallen victim to a malware infection, often without even noticing it. Whether damage is inflicted depends largely on the protection mechanisms in place.?

How can I spot a scam?

There is no fool-proof way to always identify a scam all of the time.? Some of the latest techniques used by scammers mean that even so-called security experts can be fooled.

It is imperative to ensure you have layers of security in place, including anti-spam, anti-malware and antivirus detection along with a firewall ? and most importantly, a link scanning technology that inspects web links as you click on them.? Plus use your commonsense before clicking on links sent by strangers.

Will using the ?In private? browser feature keep me safe?

No, using this privacy feature in web browsers does nothing more than prevent browsing history, images and content being stored permanently on your computer or device.

Using ?In private? browsing still allows malicious websites to infect your system or take advantage of a vulnerability, or trick you into revealing private information; and more often than not actually helps the bad guys cover their tracks since your browser keeps no record of what happened.

5 cyber-safety tips

Protect every Internet-enabled device with security software: your computer, laptop, tablet and mobile

Switch on automatic updates for all programs and upgrade to the latest operating system

All data has value to a cybercriminal ?so consider carefully what personal information you are willing to share in the public domain

Only carry out financial transactions in a secure https:// page. Also, ?use a credit rather than debit card as the financial institution will not charge you for any proven fraudulent activity on your credit card

Think and check before you click through on any link or attachment, particularly on the latest social networking sites

Real Estate Hotties: Marco Carvajal vs. Scott Brittain - Hottest Week ...

marcovsscott.jpgOur second round of the Real Estate Hotties contest continues with another face-off between two round one winners: Marco Carvajal of Herth Real Estate and Scott Brittain of Hill & Co. After the jump, Q&A and your chance to cast your vote.

212121.jpegMarco Carvajal of Herth Real Estate

Have you always been in the real estate industry or did you have a different career before entering brokerdom? I've been in some form of sales my entire life. I began working in real estate about 3 years ago doing leasing and corporate housing. I was destined to be a realtor considering my mother's love of real estate and her propensity towards dragging her son to every open house within 30 miles.

What do you like to do when you're not selling real estate? I spend a fair amount of time lifting weights, running, cycling, and at the dog park with my 4 year old english bulldog Lela. I frequent San Francisco's nightlife scene and travel a lot.

Best advice for buyers/renters? Persistance, patience, and a positive attitude. Whether you're looking to buy or rent in the city the competition is fierce and it's crucial that you not get flustered or frustrated.

People in your industry are always so good looking. What are some of your secret grooming tips? Thankfully I have a leg up on my competition. I was born gay and latin, so that means good hair and skin. I thank my overbearing Jewish mother and green card toting Ecuadorean father for that.

Sb%202.jpegScott Brittain of Hill & Co.

What's the best part about selling real estate in San Francisco? The best part about selling real estate in San Francisco is the unique nature of this city and the homes within it. There is so much history and character to this city and each home I place my clients into always comes with its own unique tale. Additionally, I love that this city is always changing and evolving. I was born and raised in this city, but every time I step out of my door I find new things, meet new people and stumble upon hidden gems that this city has to offer.

What's the most rewarding part about what you do? The most rewarding part of the real estate is the diverse clientele you meet and the bonds you forge with them. I have had clients from all different walks of life and have been fortunate to work with some awesome people. Also, housewarming parties are a big perk of my job. I get to walk around the party and broadcast how important I am. It's essential for everyone to know that if it wasn't for me, they wouldn't be enjoying such a fun party.

What separates you from the others in this competition? My refusal to lose is what separates me from the others in this competition. You could put Ryan Gosling into this competition and it wouldn't matter one bit. Gosling knows better than to challenge me. I will do whatever it takes to win. I am better than everyone in this competition at finding hilarious Youtube videos online, useless knowledge and my undying love for the Giants and the 49ers. I also do a pretty solid job of being a fair weather Warriors and Sharks fan. In other words, I am the manliest nominee in this competition.

What do you like to do when you're not selling real estate? When I am not selling real estate, I enjoy hanging out with my girlfriend Ashley, our dog Cooper, my friends and family. I love hanging out in The City, Sonoma or taking a trip to Lake Tahoe. I also enjoy being around the sport of lacrosse. I have been playing for years and I have coached at my alma mater, Saint Ignatius, for the last five years.

Ruling Is A Set-Back To Obama's Clean Air Plan

A federal court has rejected a rule that would have regulated air pollution that blows from one state to the next. The ruling puts a damper on the Obama administration's efforts to reduce asthma, heart disease and other ailments related to air pollution. States and utilities asserted that the rules overstepped the EPA's authority under the Clean Air Act.

President Obama Pivots Attacks to Mitt Romney-Paul Ryan Education Plan

COLUMBUS, Ohio - President Obama kicked off a two-day campaign swing through Ohio and Nevada today by shifting the focus of his attacks from Medicare and taxes to education, slamming the Mitt Romney-Paul Ryan plan to cut student aid.

"Whether it's a four-year college [or] a two-year program, higher education is not a luxury, it is an economic necessity that every family in America should be able to afford. And that's what's at stake in this election," the president told supporters.

Obama's education pitch, which he is outlining in visits to two colleges and a high school in critical battleground states, is part of a broader effort to show how the Romney-Ryan budget cuts would negatively impact Americans.

Speaking at Capital University, the president told students heading back to school that his rivals' plan would slash education funding to pay for tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires, hurting the nation's ability to compete in the global economy.

"It's a vision that says we can't help young people who are trying to make it because we've got to protect the folks who already have made it," the president said to boos from the crowd of 3,000.

Arguing the GOP plan would leave you "on your own," Obama recounted how Romney recommended students "borrow money if you have to from your parents" and "shop around" when asked how he would make college more affordable.

"What Gov. Romney is offering is not an answer," Obama said. "As we're fighting back from the worst economic crisis of our lifetimes, you've got a lot of parents who are out there struggling just to make ends meet. And I don't accept the notion that we should deny any child the opportunity to get a higher education."

The president drew stark contrasts with his opponent's wealthy background as he explained how he and his wife understood "first hand" the burden of student loan debt.

"We've been in your shoes," he said. "Neither of us came from wealthy families. Both of us graduated from college and law school with a mountain of debt. When we married, we got poor together."

In response, the Romney campaign slammed the president's track record on education, saying "too many young Americans are suffering from higher college costs, more debt and a lack of good jobs when they graduate."

"Today's policies are just more of the same from a president who hasn't fixed the economy or kept his promises to the young people who supported him four years ago. The Romney-Ryan plan will deliver 12 million new jobs to help recent graduates - and all Americans - enjoy a more prosperous future," a Romney campaign spokeswoman said.

The president also spent time visiting with Ohio students today. Before his speech, Obama made a surprise stop at Sloopy's Diner, a popular Ohio State University hangout, for lunch.

The president ordered a classic Reuben sandwich with potato chips and a piece of Buckeye Pie (peanut butter and chocolate with whipped cream). He also ordered a cheeseburger and fries for aide Marvin Nicholson, according to pool reports, before getting to work greeting students, who head back to class Wednesday.

"The only problem seeing you guys," Obama was overheard saying, was that it reminded him that his own daughter, Malia, would be going to college in a few years.

"Are you ready?" one student asked.

"No," he replied. "I don't want them to leave yet."

The president then worked his way around the restaurant and posed for photos, including one with a group of three students pantomiming O-H-I-O for Ohio State. Obama put his hands up as the letter "I."

PR Win: Netflix Announces 1M Streaming Subscribers In UK And Ireland

netflixbuilding4Good job Netflix PR: Today the company announced that, just seven months after launch in the UK and Ireland, it has hit 1 million subscribers for its video streaming service. That's pretty impressive, by any measure, but it's also somewhat old news. During last month's Q2 financing results, the company openly talked about its numbers internationally, trumpeting growth in the UK and Ireland in particular, noting that -- yes - it has reached the 1M mark. TechCrunch, of course, reported this milestone at the time, in which Netflix was also quick to point out that it had "pulled ahead" of its European competitor Amazon-owned LOVEFiLM in "every important streaming-related metric." Unlike Netflix in the UK and Ireland, LOVEFiLM doesn't just offer a streaming-only option, but is also playing in the legacy 'DVD rental by post' space, hence Netflix's emphasis on streaming-related metrics.
