The man fatally shot outside a southwest Gainesville apartment Thursday night has been identified as a Santa Fe College student who police believe went to the apartment as part of a drug deal.

Eugene Shelton, 26, was killed, Gainesville police detective Cpl. Bennie Smith said.

?We think he was going to meet someone reference a drug transaction. We don't know what happened after that. It could have been robbery, it could have been anything,? Smith said. ?For some reason he was meeting with someone and was shot.?

No arrests have been made.

Shelton was shot in the chest and underwent surgery at Shands at the University of Florida before dying.

Police first got a call about a gunshot about 8:26 p.m. at Rocky Point apartments at 3100 SW 35th Place. A woman told police she heard a gunshot, looked out her window, saw a man in a white T-shirt running toward a wooded area and saw another man get into a car and drive off, police spokeswoman Angelina Valuri said Thursday night.

While police were at the apartment, Shands notified GPD that a man with a gunshot wound had been brought to the hospital, Valuri said.

The shooting appears to have occurred in the parking lot outside an apartment.

Smith said police have spoken to the man who drove Shelton to the hospital but would not discuss what was learned from the interview.

Police canvassed the neighborhood last night and again on Friday to try to learn if anyone witnessed the incident or has any information about the shooter.
