As cowboys and cowgirls prepare to saddle up for the 102nd California Rode next week, four young women are competing for the Miss California Rodeo Salinas crown.
This year's contestants are Tracy Hinson, Olivia Pereira, Sierra Smith and Grace Tobias.?
They will arrive in Salinas prior to the rodeo to compete for two days in horsemanship, personality, beauty and academics. The contest winner will receive the Miss California Rodeo Salinas 2012 title, a $2,500 cash scholarship, gold and silver trophy belt buckle, a gold and silver tiara, and the use of a two-horse trailer for one year.
Olivia Pereira
Pereira, 20, of San Martin, represents her area as Miss Santa Clara County Cattlemen?s Association.
After finishing her credits at Gavilan College, Pereira was accepted for the 2012 fall semester at the California State University of Monterey Bay. She plans to major in biological and natural sciences to further study land management, conservation, zoology and wildlife biology. Pereira is currently working as a wrangler in Carmel Valley with the Santa Lucia Conservancy.
Pereira comes from a small ranch in San Martin where she has established her equestrian lifestyle showing quarter horses, riding in both western and English, and enjoys working cattle, penning, sorting, cutting and some jumping. While school and work take the majority of her time, she still finds time to give back to her community through volunteer and community work.
Sierra Smith
Smith, 21, of Orosi, entered as Miss Cutler-Orosi Chamber of Commerce. Currently attending the College of the Sequoias in Visalia and pursuing a degree in communications. Smith said she dreams of being a rodeo sports commentator and is currently learning to rope.
Smith has competed in various equestrian events including: reining, western pleasure, cross-country jumping, dressage, extreme cowboy racing and trail.
