It was a year ago that I broke the first story here on the Huffington Post about the opening of the new Mullin Automotive Museum 60 miles from L.A. in sunny, breezy seaside Oxnard, California. My friends Peter and Merle Mullin had bought the building where L.A. Times publisher Otis Chandler exhibited his car collection and completely renovated it into an exquisite eye-opening stunner of a museum dedicated to the art-deco world of fine cars and equivalent objets d'art. I subsequently wrote about the Bugatti rally held there and their exhibition of the 1936 Bugatti, considered the rarest car in the world. A few weeks ago I ran into Merle, just back from their home in Italy, at a food benefit, and she told me that she and Peter would be exhibiting a few cars at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. (And also invited me to the opening of their new winery in Sonoma in late September.)

The 61st annual Pebble Beach event, near Monterey, has become the most celebrated event in the world of fine cars, a startling departure from the time in 1950 when 30 cars were shown on the golf course there to start the competition. This year some 227 of the world's rarest and most beautiful automotive specimens were proudly displayed at the week-long prestigious event. (Jay Leno and Sir Richard Branson were in the crowd.) So I was delighted when Merle called me from Pebble Beach with the astonishing, exciting news that the car which she and Peter had lovingly restored over several years had just won the "Best in Show"! It was Peter's 27th entry in this competition and, although winning his class several times, this was his first "Best in Show" win out of 20 class winners. Later the 70-year-old philanthropist said, "This is the most exciting, significant moment of my life, apart from the time when I married Merle." (And the story of their romance is one which someday I will write about here... a wonderful series of calls and coincidences which resulted in the happiest marriage I know.) He later told me, "I've been showing here for nearly three decades. We were in the bullpen on the 18th green with the other two finalists from a field of 227 cars and when the judges pointed to me I thought I had won third place. Then the fireworks went off, the gold confetti came down and I knew we had won."

The winning car was a 1934 French-made Voisin C-25 Aerodyne (pronounced wah-san), just beating out a 1938 Talbot-Lago T150C and a 1929 Bentley Speed Six. Merle emailed me some pictures of the winning car and its rather amazing fabric in a bold geometric pattern which covered every square inch of the interior. Peter said, "This is not an interior you would want to be in with a hangover." Merle told me that the car was designed and built by Gabriel Voisin, an idiosyncratic French aviation pioneer who created the world's first manned, engine-powered aircraft capable of sustained, controlled flight. In 1919 he switched to car design, creating vehicles made from what was then lightweight materials like aluminum utilizing aerodynamic principles. Concours chairwoman Sandra Butler said in a statement, "The Voisin is a four-door closed car, so it's actually an unexpected winner. However, the car's remarkable attention to detail brought it forward during judging and it became a real crowd-pleaser."

Knowing that Peter is kind of a fanatic about actually driving the cars in his collection, I asked what it was like to drive this Voisin. He laughed and said, "I have 15 more Voisins, so I know a little about them. It's fabulous to drive once you figure out the complicated transmission and gearbox." He went on to explain that the power plant is a story in itself. "The mill in the C-25 Aerodyne is a sleeve-valve engine, one of the most complicated things of all time because the cylinders move up and down. It's very quiet if you have it right... but it's hard to get there. Someone once said to me, 'Peter, if you have a Voisin that doesn't smoke there's something wrong with the engine.'"

Merle told me that this car had taken top honors in the 1932-37 European Classic category, a stunning example of vintage French design with its streamlined aluminum coachwork and art deco curves, striking signature bird-in-flight hood ornament, unique fender struts, massive vacuum-powered mechanized retractable sliding arched roof and playful interior print; it was launched in Paris in the 30s, and only 28 of them were ever built, each powered by a 3.0 liter inline-6 engine with an output of just over 100 horsepower. Merle said that this car had been found in a barn near Monaco, where we retrieved it seven years ago. It was in complete but derelict condition and the subsequent restoration took thousands of hours over the course of three years. Peter went on to say, "I am an absolute nut about classic French art deco cars like the Talbot Lago and the Delahaye [Editor's note: my favorite car in the world is a Delahaye from their collection]. A lot of people come to the museum to see the art deco displays, the furniture and such. They may not really care about cars when they arrive, but I want them to leave caring about them."

Stocks slide as Buffett/BofA rally fades

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 170.89 points, or 1.5 percent, to close at 11,149.82. It had been up 85 points shortly after the opening bell.

Bank of America Corp. jumped 9 percent on news that Warren Buffett will invest $5 billion in the troubled bank. BofA had lost half its value this year as investors grew worried about its need to raise capital and its growing liabilities related to subprime mortgages.

Other banks also rose after the billionaire investor gave his backing to Bank of America. Morgan Stanley gained 2.7 percent and Citigroup Inc. 4.8 percent. BofA and American Express Co. were the only companies in the Dow to rise.

This week's trading has been marked by a series of sudden reversals. Robert Stein, a money manager responsible for $1.2 billion at Astor Asset Management, said questions about the economy have made investors uncertain and the stock market more volatile. Gains made one day can disappear the next, or even in the same day.

"We're not seeing anything that's convincingly bearish enough to call another recession, but nothing optimistic enough to suggest that a recovery is going to regenerate," Stein said.

Friday could be another day of big swings as Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke gives a highly anticipated speech at a conference in Jackson Hole, Wyo.

Earlier Thursday, the government reported an increase in the number of first-time claims for unemployment benefits last week. The Labor Department said applications for benefits rose to 417,000, the highest in five weeks. The figure was inflated by a strike at Verizon which ended earlier this week.

The S&P 500 index fell 18.33 points, or 1.6 percent, to 1,159.27. The Nasdaq fell 48.06 points, or 1.9 percent, to 2,419.63.

The S&P 500, the benchmark for most money managers, has gained 3 percent this week but is still down 10 percent for the month. Thursday's drop broke a three-day rally in which the Dow gained 503 points.

Paul Zemsky, chief investment officer of ING Investment Management in New York, said this week's gains were a result of investors bargain-hunting after stocks fell too far over the past month. He also said some of the gains were caused by technical trading as investors bought shares in order to exit short positions, or bets that the market would continue to fall.

Zemsky expects to see more big swings as long as the fear of recession hangs over the market. "People are trying to adjust their positions to news," he said. "Once it's clear where the economy is headed, I think things will calm down."

There's plenty of speculation about whether Ben Bernanke will offer more support for the economy. It was at the same symposium last year that Bernanke first laid out an argument for the central bank's $600 billion bond-buying program.

Zemsky thinks there's little chance Bernanke will announce any new action. "There's nothing more than hope that Bernanke will drop a gift from the sky."

More than three stocks fell for every one that rose on the New York Stock Exchange. Trading volume was above average at 5 billion shares.

In the wake of a report from Michael Silver of Yahoo! Sports claiming that, according to ?one highly knowledgeable member of the organization,? Tebow actually would land behind Adam Weber on the four-deep quarterback depth chart, the Broncos are finally pushing back.

Asked about Silver?s report on Wednesday, coach John Fox gave Tebow a boost.

?First of all, I would like to say that nobody in this building that is in the decision-making process ? coach, official, or I don?t know, maybe they heard it from the cook,? Fox said.? ?I?m not sure, but we hold Tim in high regard.? I think he?s got a bright future in this game.? He?s playing maybe the hardest position I know in the NFL there is to play, and maybe in all of sports.? He?s progressing fine.? ?All media, all types and levels, desperate for headlines that will move product,? Saccomano said.? He added that, due to the pressure to generate headlines, ?sometimes the tabloid mentality overtakes objectivity, at expense of some great journalists.?

Saccomano thinks that the work of ?[h]it and run journalists? will ?speed development of team-only media.?? But that isn?t the answer, either.? The fans know that they?ll rarely, if ever, get truly objective assessments of a given team from media bought and paid for by that team.

Besides, the NFL as a whole benefits from intense coverage of the sport, regardless of whether a given story is fair or unfair, biased or unbiased, true or untrue.? As long as folks are talking more and more and more about pro football, more and more and more people will want to watch or attend the games.? That?s why every personnel controversy regarding a given team, while likely bad for the team in question, is good for the league as a whole.

Now, with a growing number of courses in computer technology on offer from different institutions in New York City, you too can become a member of the computer doctor elite. The only question you have to ask yourself is this: Do you have the computer savvy to learn the secret methods to battle glitches like the spinning circle of death?

In order to enroll in a program to become a computer technician, you should already have a working knowledge of how to operate a computer. You should know how to create different types of documents, browse the Internet and compose an email. A healthy curiosity about ?how the PC works internally and what it takes to deal with its common problems? is also a plus, according to the program description for a computer technician course at Hunter College.

Most often, people who enroll in such courses are pursuing a career as an IT professional or are already in the PC repair business. These courses cover basic knowledge about the workings of the computer, software/operating system variants, networking, the Internet, assembly and disassembly of the PC, malfunctions, viruses, troubleshooting and customer support. Many of the areas covered are those that aspiring technicians will be tested on when taking CompTIA certification tests. CompTIA, the information technology industry association, offers a variety of certifications within the field, the most common and basic of which are the A+ and Networks+ certifications.

?CompTIA A+ measures the necessary competencies of an entry-level IT professional with a recommended 500 hours of hands-on experience in the lab or field. It tests for technical understanding of computer technology, networking and security, as well as the communication skills and professionalism now required of all entry-level IT professionals,? reads a statement on the CompTIA website.

A+ certification is proof of competence in areas such as installation, preventative maintenance, networking, security and troubleshooting. The two requirements for CompTIA A+ certification are the A+ Essentials and Practical Application exams. CompTIA Network+ certification proves knowledge of networking features and functions and is the leading vendor-neutral certification for networking professionals. All certification exams are 90 minutes long and consist of 100 questions.

There are a few different courses and programs offered in New York that you can take to prepare for these exams and become a computer technician or IT professional. City University of New York offers a number of computer technology courses in its continuing education programs at Hunter College, New York City College of Technology and Medgar Evers College. A high school diploma or a GED is required for entry in these courses.

The computer technician certificate program at Hunter College consists of two courses and introduces students to the basic concepts and mechanics of PC support, with a emphasis on concepts at the first level and on mechanics at the second level. Classes meet in the evenings and the full certificate program package costs $1,300?separately, each level costs $700.

New York City College of Technology offers classes geared specifically toward preparation for CompTIA exams. The A+ certification test prep course costs $790, with an additional $120 for textbook and personal tools. The Networking Technologies course also costs $790, with $70 for textbook expenses. The Computer Technology Institute at Medgar Evers College offers courses in the basic computer programs you should be familiar with before enrolling in the more advanced classes, though they not actual prerequisites. CUNY courses are offered every semester and tuition can be paid either at once or on a set payment plan.

PC Tech vocational and technical school in New York City offers a variety of computer classes, both part time and full time. Among them is a part-time CompTIA A+ class that meets over the course of four weeks, either two nights a week or on Saturdays, and costs $399 for 28 hours. A full-time CompTIA A+ class meets Monday through Friday mornings for three weeks and costs $750 for 54 hours.

Other centers offering courses and training in computer and information technology are NetCom Information Technology, Ace Computer Training and Technology Career Services. And if you cannot afford to pay for such courses, the Per Scholas Institute for Technology in the South Bronx offers free intensive technology training to people in low-income communities. Per Scholas covers the cost of both tuition and books and even offers job placement services for students.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Steve Jobs, the mind behind the iPhone, iPad and other devices that turned Apple Inc. into one of the world's most powerful companies, resigned as CEO on Wednesday, saying he can no longer handle the job but will continue to play a leadership role.

The move appears to be the result of an unspecified medical condition for which Jobs took a leave from his post in January. Apple's chief operating officer, Tim Cook, was quickly named CEO of the company Jobs co-founded 35 years ago in his garage.

In a letter addressed to Apple's board and the "Apple community," Jobs said he "always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come."

The company said Jobs gave the board his resignation Wednesday and suggested Cook be named the company's new leader. Apple said Jobs was elected board chairman and Cook is becoming a member of its board.

Genentech Inc. Chairman Art Levinson, in a statement issued on behalf of Apple's board, said Jobs' "extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as the world's most innovative and valuable technology company."

He said that Jobs will continue to provide "his unique insights, creativity and inspiration," and that the board has "complete confidence" that Cook is the right person to replace him.

"''Tim's 13 years of service to Apple have been marked by outstanding performance, and he has demonstrated remarkable talent and sound judgment in everything he does," Levinson said.

Jobs' health has long been a concern for Apple investors who see him as an industry oracle who seems to know what consumers want long before they do. After his announcement, Apple stock quickly fell 5.4 percent in after-hours trading.

Jeff Gamet, managing editor of The Mac Observer online news site focused on Apple, said Jobs' departure has more sentimental than practical significance, and that he has been telegraphing the change for several years.

"All Apple really has done is made official what they've been doing administratively for a while now, which is Tim runs the show and Steve gets to do his part to make sure the products come out to meet the Apple standard," he said.

"I expect that even though there are a lot of people that right now are sad or scared because Steve is stepping back from the CEO role, that ultimately they'll be OK," Gamet said.

But Trip Chowdhry, an analyst with Global Equities Research, said Jobs' maniacal attention to detail is what set Apple apart. He said Apple's product pipeline might be secure for another few years, but predicted that the company will eventually struggle to come up with market-changing ideas.

"Apple is Steve Jobs, Steve Jobs is Apple, and Steve Jobs is innovation," Chowdhry said. "You can teach people how to be operationally efficient, you can hire consultants to tell you how to do that, but God creates innovation. ... Apple without Steve Jobs is nothing."

Earlier this month Apple became the most valuable company in America, briefly surpassing Exxon Mobil. At the market close Wednesday its market value was $349 billion, just behind Exxon Mobil's $358 billion.

Jobs' hits seemed to grow bigger as the years went on: After the colorful iMac computer and the now-ubiquitous iPod, the iPhone redefined the category of smart phones and the iPad all but created the market for tablet computers.

His own aura seemed part of the attraction. On stage at trade shows and company events in his uniform of jeans, sneakers and black mock-turtlenecks, he'd entrance audiences with new devices, new colors, new software features, building up to a grand finale he'd predictably preface by saying, "One more thing."

Jobs, 56, shepherded Apple from a two-man startup to Silicon Valley darling when the Apple II, the first computer for regular people to really catch on, sent IBM Corp. and others scrambling to get their own PCs to market.

After Apple suffered a slump in the mid-1980s, he was forced out of the company. He was CEO at Next, another computer company, and Pixar, the computer-animation company that produced "Toy Story" on his watch, over the following 10 years.

Apple was foundering as he returned as an adviser in 1996 ? a year it lost $900 million as Microsoft Windows-based PCs dominated the computer market. The company's fortunes began to turn around with its first new product under Jobs' direction, the iMac, which launched in 1998 and sold about 2 million in its first 12 months.

Jobs eventually became interim CEO, then took the job permanently. Apple's popularity grew in the U.S. throughout the 2000s as the ever-sleeker line of iPods introduced many lifelong Windows users to their first Apple gadget. Apple created another sensation in 2007 with the iPhone, the stark-looking but powerful smart phone that quickly dominated the industry.

The iPad was introduced less than a year and a half ago but has already sold nearly 29 million units as it inspired myriad rivals in a tablet computer market that scarcely existed before Apple stepped in.

There have been some setbacks. Apple was swept up in a massive Securities and Exchange Commission inquiry into stock options backdating in the mid-2000s, a practice that artificially boosted the value of options grants. But Jobs and Apple emerged unscathed after two former executives took the fall and eventually settled with the SEC.

As Jobs was praised for his vision, concerns about his health persisted. The January leave was Jobs' third medical leave over several years. He had previously survived pancreatic cancer and received a liver transplant.

Shannon Cross, an analyst at Cross Research, said Cook is a good choice to replace Jobs.

"He has taken over for Jobs twice in two medical leaves and the company has functioned extremely well," she said, adding that Cook has been Jobs' "right hand guy" for many years.

Cross also said Jobs put in place a "culture of innovation" that will help Apple remain a creative force in the industry.

"Steve Jobs is an extremely strong leader and clearly has made Apple a leading consumer electronics company and one of the most innovative companies in the world," she said. "However, he didn't do it alone."

Thousands of travelers delayed by East Coast quake (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Thousands of travelers flying to and from the East Coast were delayed Tuesday by an earthquake that shook airport terminals and forced the evacuation of air traffic control towers at some of the nation's busiest airports.

Immediately after the quake, the FAA ordered planes at airports around the country to stay on the ground rather than fly to airports in New York, Philadelphia, New Jersey, Washington, D.C., and Virginia where traffic was temporarily halted. Among major airports in the region, only New York's LaGuardia continued operations throughout the day.

By late afternoon, traffic at all the airports was returning to normal, although delays were expected into the evening.

Delta Air Lines said it expected to cancel about 15 flights from JFK and a dozen flights from Reagan National because of the earthquake. JetBlue had resumed all operations, but it was urging passengers to check their flight status and expect delays both in and out of East Coast airports. JetBlue reported seven diversions, but no cancellations.

American Airlines diverted four planes away from the earthquake zone, said spokesman Tim Smith.

"In those first minutes, we didn't know what we had, so we sent them elsewhere until we had a better handle on what the conditions were," Smith said. He said all four planes would be refueled and eventually continue to their scheduled destination, although delays could snowball in the busy New York air corridor.

"Airplanes are coming and going," Smith said, "but at the New York airports, when you get a delay it tends to stay."

United Airlines diverted two JFK-bound planes; one to Pittsburgh and the other to Hartford, Conn. Both were expected to finish the trip to New York later Tuesday, said airline spokeswoman Megan McCarthy.

"We do have some delays, but (the earthquake) was a fairly minimal impact," she said.

Southwest Airlines expected delays on the East Coast to continue into Tuesday evening but didn't expect widespread cancellations, said spokeswoman Beth Harbin.

Two hours after the earthquake, the FAA was still reporting delays at Newark Liberty International Airport and Reagan National Airport near Washington. Flights leaving the Philadelphia airport also experienced delays of more than an hour Tuesday afternoon.

There were transportation snarls elsewhere along the East Coast as well. Amtrak reported train service along the Northeast Corridor between Baltimore and Washington, D.C., was operating at reduced speeds. Amtrak crews were inspecting stations and railroad infrastructure before returning to normal operation.

Washington's Union Station ? which serves Amtrak, commuter trains and the Metro subway ? was evacuated due to falling plaster. Metro officials said subway trains were undamaged, but were operating at reduced speeds.

The towers at Kennedy, Newark and Reagan National airports were evacuated during the quake, according to officials for the FAA and the National Air Traffic Contollers Association.

Tim Hardison, an official with controllers association, said Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland was closed to air traffic. Air traffic for the base is handled by controllers working for FAA.

Laura Brown, a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration, who was evacuated from FAA's headquarters in downtown Washington, said in an email that she wasn't aware of equipment outages.

But Hardison said the FAA regional air traffic control center in Leesburg, Va., was "shaking pretty hard" during the quake, which was centered in Virginia.

"Everyone was aware that something not-so-good was going on. I can't describe how long it lasted because we were all just looking at each other," Hardison said in an email.

"We are still trying to talk to aircraft because they wanted to know why they were shaking," he said in an email about an hour after the earthquake. "No one was in a panic state, but people were trying to figure out what was going on."

Controllers at the center, which handles air traffic for several airports in Virginia and Maryland, "just kept doing their job," he said.

After the quake, all controllers in the building ? including those taking their breaks ? were ordered back to the control room "to make sure everything was squared away there," Hardison said.

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syria's President Bashar Assad planned to respond to U.S. and European demands for his ouster in a rare interview Sunday, as a Western diplomat and activists accused the regime of trying to scrub away signs of the crackdown ahead of the visit of a U.N. team.

Assad will also address government reforms and his "future vision" for Syria in the evening television interview with Syrian TV, the station said. It will be Assad's fourth public appearance since the revolt against his family's 40-year rule erupted in mid-March, but the only first time he has agreed to take any questions ? although from the state-owned network.

The Syrian leader has come under mounting criticism over the brutal military offensive that has used tanks, snipers and gunboats to try to crush the uprising. Most recently, the United States and its European allies on Thursday demanded he step down. Late Saturday, former ally Turkey called Syria's situation "unsustainable."

Assad rarely grants interviews to local media outlets. His previous appearances were nationally televised speeches that led to even larger protests calling for his downfall.

In his last speech on June 20, he blamed the unrest on a foreign conspiracy and on "saboteurs," offered modest potential reforms, but gave no sign he'd move toward ending the his family's political domination.

The daily Al-Thawra newspaper, which speaks for the Syrian regime, on Saturday rejected the Obama administration's calls and any foreign intervention in Syria.

It said the demands revealed the "face of the conspiracy" against Damascus, which has grown increasingly isolated by the regime's deadly crackdown on protesters. The latest casualties from the weekend ? including a prominent activist shot dead ? suggest Assad is either unwilling to stop the violence or not fully in control of his own regime. Activists say nearly 2,000 civilians have been killed in the revolt.

"The situation is not sustainable," the Anatolia news agency quoted Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu as saying to Turkish journalists during a visit to South Africa late Saturday.

"It is not about external reaction or pressure. The Syrian leadership must reconcile with the people. Otherwise it would be difficult for the country to create public order," he said.

Davutoglu said he traveled to Damascus earlier this month and he and Assad agreed to a "roadmap" during talks, but that deadly operations against protesters intensified within two days of the meeting.

Turkey, a neighbor and former close ally of Syria, has been increasingly frustrated with Damascus' crackdown. But Turkey, Syria's most important trade partner, has not joined new U.S. and European sanctions.

A Western diplomat said a U.N. team assessing humanitarian needs in the country arrived in Damascus late Saturday and started work Sunday. The team has received permission to visit some of the centers of protest and crackdown, including the coastal town of Latakia, the central cities of Homs and Hama, the southern city of Daraa and areas in Idlib province north of the country.

The team is scheduled to visit Latakia on Monday. Activists said authorities were cleaning up the city's al-Ramel neighborhood after a four-day military operation earlier this week.

The Western diplomat confirmed the area, which is home to thousands of Palestinian refugees, was being subjected to "a serious clean up operation" in advance of the arrival of the U.N. humanitarian mission led by the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

"In Latakia they are literally sweeping glass and stones up and scrubbing blood off the streets," he said on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject.

"But any attempts to whitewash and destroy evidence can only backfire on this isolated regime," he said.

A high-level U.N. team recommended Thursday that the violence in Syria be referred to the International Criminal Court over possible crimes against humanity.

U.N. humanitarian chief Valerie Amos told the U.N. Security Council this week that any assessment must be conducted independently, with no restrictions.

There has been no official comment in Syria following Assad's declaration to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday that military and security operations have stopped.

The government's offensive has continued across the country, although on a smaller scale, despite that pledge.

Activists said security forces stormed the Khaldieh district in Homs Sunday, carrying out a security raid and random arrests. They said the military also stormed districts in the northern Idlib province.

Activists said security forces on Saturday shot dead two people in the town of Rastan, near the provincial capital of Homs, including Mahmoud Ayoub, a prominent activist who organized protests.

The group said troops also wounded at least eight people Saturday in Homs, where a general strike was under way to protest the crackdown and most of the city's markets were closed.

A Syrian military official said an "armed, terrorist group" ambushed a military bus in Homs Saturday, killing two officers and wounding three others, one of them in critical condition. The regime often blames violence on alleged armed gangs seeking to destabilize Syria, instead of true reform seekers.

With Los Angeles moving closer to building an NFL stadium, one of the NFL teams most commonly tied to L.A. is the closest ? the San Diego Chargers.? Indeed, there?s some talk that the Chargers could move from Qualcomm Stadium to a temporary location (like the Rose Bowl) as soon as next year.

Team counsel Marc Fabiani says that?s highly unlikely.

?I think the downtown L.A. project is years away,? Fabiani said Thursday, per ESPNLosAngeles.com.? ?I think it would be a miracle like the loaves and the fishes if they could Error: Break shortcode syntax invalid.?

The Chargers have a three-month window every year, from February 1 through May 1, to break their lease with the payment of a fee that reduces every year.? In 2012, the numbers drops to $24 million.

Fabiani said. ?He?s had a shovel-ready project for over two years.? He?s got support from the city and money from the city.? He has his EIR done and he?s got the exemption from the lawsuits.? He has everything and he hasn?t turned over a single shovel full of dirt because he doesn?t have a team, and it?s not from a lack of trying.?

In the end, it?s all about leverage.? The question of whether the Chargers ?want? to play in San Diego or Los Angeles doesn?t matter.? The Chargers ?want? the best deal, and the best way to get it is to flirt with as many Mary Magdalenes as possible.

Atlanta Home Improvement is excited to announce that Janet Riley?s ?Make-Do? Kitchen has won our kitchen makeover contest! Janet will receive $10,000-worth of cabinet fronts and countertops courtesy of Kitchen Fronts of Georgia and Premier Surfaces, and the kitchen makeover will be featured in Atlanta Home Improvement?s December 2011 issue.

We just spoke to Janet, who says she is ?thrilled? to be the winner of the kitchen makeover and ?so blessed? by everyone who voted for her on our website. Janet, whose contest entry we dubbed the ?Make-Do? Kitchen, was one of four finalists selected by Atlanta Home Improvement, Kitchen Fronts of Georgia and Premier Surfaces. Then, in late June, we posted the top four contest entries on our blog and handed the final decision to our readers, who cast their votes by leaving comments. The response was astounding, with 345 total votes cast as of July 22, when we closed the contest.

In the end, voters were most moved by Janet?s contest entry, which included photos of her deteriorating cabinet fronts and old laminate countertops plus a heart-felt essay about why the plans for her dream kitchen have been sidetracked:

?? Following our marriage in 1999, I moved into my new husband?s house. Not thrilled with parts of the kitchen, I accepted the laminate counters and press-board cabinet doors since it was to be our home for only a short time. Ed would retire from the Army in a couple years, by which time we would have nearly completed our personally designed new home. We planned to build OUR dream house together, which included MY dream kitchen. The dream was never realized, however, because my husband passed away a little more than 2 years later. My sweet husband didn?t make it to retirement. Not only was our dream home not to become reality, ALL our dreams together ended abruptly with his rather sudden passing. Today, 9 years later, I still live in that ?temporary? house? I have come to love it, and I?m very happy to call home this house I did not choose?. but I long to fix the scarred countertop and those pitiful coming-apart cabinet doors! Great countertops and real wood cabinet fronts will make it my BEAUTIFUL dream kitchen, and I know my soldier angel will smile, smile.?
