Samsung Won?t Be Settling with Apple, Executive Says

As expected, Samsung won?t be putting an end to its intellectual property disputes with Apple any time soon.

?We have no such intention,? J.K. Shin, of Samsung Electronics? mobile unit, said Wednesday when asked if Samsung would seek a similar settlement to mobile device maker HTC.

Apple and HTC recently ended their nearly three-year-long patent feud, establishing a confidential licensing agreement that gives access to all current and future patents held by the tech companies for the next 10 years. The licensing terms will reportedly cost HTC up to $280 million, or up to $8 the company will have to pay Apple for each HTC Android phone sold.

Apple and Samsung have been battling one another over patent infringement in courts across the globe. Apple says Samsung infringed on patents relating to the design of the iPhone and iPad, as well as critical user-interface elements of its mobile operating system (and, indeed, was awarded over $1 billion in damages by a U.S. jury trial in San Jose, California). Samsung says Apple is in violation of its 3G standards related patents ? and in international courts like Samsung?s home of South Korea, Apple was found to be infringing on these patents.

At this point, it looks like Apple and Samsung?s litigation will continue in post-trial proceedings and appeals for years. Both companies have spent hundreds of millions in legal fees in order to one-up the other in court. With such a heavy investment ? plus the availability of flagship mobile devices and the potential of having to pay pricey licensing fees or damages at stake ? both companies will likely duke it out to the bitter end.
